Ludvig Aberg & Viktor Hovland needed only 11 holes to bring Scottie Scheffler & Brooks Koepka to their knees in 2023. The American duo lost their Saturday Foursomes contest 9 & 7 in one of the most humiliating losses delivered by a European pairing. The last record was of 7 & 5, which was made nearly 40 years ago. Fast forward to 2025, and Scheffler has the great opportunity to get his revenge.

Albeit against only half the pairing, the world #1 will face Aberg & Matt Fitzpatrick in the Friday Foursomes. And this time around, he is perfectly paired with his favorite partner, Russell Henley. The duo helped Team U.S. make a comeback in the 2024 Presidents Cup, and they will try to give their team a critical point on the opening day. But just getting a point won’t satisfy Scheffler, as he would want something more from Aberg.

Back in 2023, the 19-time PGA Tour champion had tears in his eyes after suffering the embarrassing defeat. Knowing Scheffler, he wouldn’t want his peers to suffer through anything similar. But that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t like to dominate the European pairing the same way he and Koepka were beaten in 2023.

Aberg had spoken about the scenes from Rome in the 2025 Ryder Cup press conference recently. He said, “It was somewhat of a freak result and something that we didn’t quite expect. But it was a cool experience that me and Viktor had, and it was a cool thing to do, yeah.” As much as the Swede enjoyed it, his response might have also lit a fire inside Scheffler. And now that their battle is confirmed, the 25-year-old might be preparing to tackle the wraith of the world’s best golfer.

Having said that, things won’t come easily for Scottie Scheffler just because he is in his preferred setup. While Ludvig Aberg & Matt Fitzpatrick might not be used to each other, their recent form suggests they might still give the world #1 and Russell Henley a tough fight.

Can Scottie Scheffler’s foursome opponents beat the American pair?

Let’s get one thing straight: Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick have never been paired together in the Ryder Cup. And their opponents, Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley, enjoyed a dominant run in the 2024 Presidents Cup. However, the European duo might still prove to be a huge threat considering their amazing form as individuals.

In his last nine tournaments in the U.S. and Europe, Fitzpatrick has had seven top-10 finishes. He has been on a spectacular run and is slowly getting close to ending his winless streak. Aberg has already enjoyed some success this year as he dominated the field to capture the Genesis Invitational 2025 title. He, too, ended the PGA Tour season on a high, getting two top-10s in the three playoff events.

Moreover, after the dominating Scottie Scheffler in Rome in 2023, Ludvig Aberg might also have a mental edge over his American rival at Bethpage. Hopefully, the world #1 doesn’t let that get in his head when the two face off in a few hours from now.
