A little miscommunication during an intense contest can turn into an ugly altercation. And fans got a glimpse of it on the 15th hole at Bethpage today. Justin Rose & Tommy Fleetwood were having a healthy competition with Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler. While the European duo were winning, the two groups still remained cordial for most of their match. That was until Rose & DeChambeau crossed paths on the 15th green.

As Justin explained in the post-match interview, he inquired if it was his turn to take the putt. However, DeChambeau thought it was a bit too invasive and started to hit back at the Englishman. Eventually, the two groups tied the hole with the LIV Golf pro putting to continue the match. But soon after it ended, they started arguing about the confrontation from earlier as they walked towards the 16th hole. That started a heated debate between DeChambeau & Fleetwood.

Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, also got involved in the conversation. He also pushed Team Europe vice captain, Francesco Molinari, and tried to get in his face. But the Italian veteran didn’t pay any heed to Scott as he walked on. The entire episode was tweeted by NUCLR Golf and other media houses. Kyle Porter was also shocked by the way Scheffler’s caddie behaved as he tweeted, “Ted Scott is ALL OVER Francesco Molinari!” with pictures from the incident.

LIV Golf writer Matt Vincenzi gave some context on the situation that occurred based on his perception of it. He wrote, “Clarifying situation with Bryson, Scottie, Tommy. Rose yelled at G-Bo (DeChambeau’s caddie) for walking in his line. Then celebrated in their direction when making the putt. Bryson holed his back and retaliated the smack talk back to Rose. Fino got in between. Scottie came in to defend Bryson.”

While most of it falls in line with the actual scenes at Bethpage, one thing Vincenzi may have mistyped is that Scottie never got involved in the confrontation. His caddie was the one who got involved trying to defend Bryson.

Having said that, the war of words didn’t really lead to anything, as it was already a bit too late for Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler to turn things around. And the rest of the matches also barely helped Team U.S.’s efforts to make a comeback.

Bryson DeChambeau & Co. continue to struggle despite showing fighting spirit

By no means did Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler perform badly as a pair. In 16 holes, they score 7 birdies and an eagle. In strokeplay format, they would have been at the top of the table with a score of 9-under. But the fact is, Tommy Fleetwood & Justin Rose were just too good on Saturday. They managed to score 11 birdies in 16 holes. In the end, they would have successfully completed one of Bryson’s ‘Breaking 50’ challenges on YouTube.

But the two top multi-time major winners were not the only underperforming Team U.S. players in the Fourball matches. Justin Thomas & Cameron Young also failed to make an impact, despite all the abuse their opponents, Shane Lowry & Rory McIlroy, faced from the spectators at Bethpage. Sam Burns & Patrick Cantlay also failed to score a point for the American side. In the end, Team U.S. ended the day with 4½ points as compared to Team Europe’s 11½. This is the highest Ryder Cup score a team has achieved after two days of action. Going into Sunday, Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler will have a tall mountain to climb if they want to make a comeback.
