If Friday’s atmosphere at Bethpage Black was sullen, Saturday was the polar opposite. Sadly, we’re not only talking about the New York crowd. Already, Team USA’s Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler’s luck has been trying them. It didn’t help when their caddies got involved in one of the highlights of Saturday’s four-ball match, and not for good reasons.

With Team Europe already 3 up and Justin Rose lining up at the 15th for a 15-foot birdie, DeChambeau’s caddie, Greg Bodine, walked into his path to read the American’s putt. After waiting for a second, Rose gestured Bodine to move aside, asking him, “It’s my putt, right?” The tensions were already high with Team USA failing to bridge the scoring gap. As if to add insult to injury, Rose made his birdie and celebrated in DeChambeau and Bodine’s direction. Although the American, too, followed with an 11-foot birdie, he couldn’t resist facing Rose later.

As the group walked towards the uphill 16th, the LIV Golfer approached Rose and the two had a heated exchange. Then, Rose’s partner, Tommy Fleetwood, and his caddie, Ian Finnis, joined the heated discussion that prompted Scottie Scheffler’s caddie, Ted Scott, to have words with Team Europe vice captain, Francesco Molinari. No surprise, it became a viral highlight soon as NUCLR Golf tweeted the video.

They captioned their tweet, writing, “Tensions FLARE between Team USA & Team Europe players and caddies following an altercation on the 15th hole at Bethpage Black. Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Rose, Ted Scott & more exchange words!”

As seen in the video, Scott, in the heat of the moment, also pushed Molinari, trying to get in his face. But the Italian veteran didn’t pay any heed to Scott as he walked on. By the looks of it, everything calmed down as Team Europe took the easy win with Rose making a 6½-foot par putt to seal the 3&2 win on the 16th hole.  According to Rose, too, things should’ve been resolved after the discussions.

“Maybe I didn’t say it as politely as I could have said it in the moment, but by no means was there any disrespect or anything like that. But obviously it was taken the wrong way. It was a shame that the match got to that point because it was actually a really great match… I spoke to the boys. It (the situation) should be (over), in my opinion. There was no intent behind it whatsoever,” Rose said.

Interestingly, this is not the first time under Team Europe captain Luke Donald that a caddie drama has heated the match. Previously, it happened in his match against Patrick Cantlay and Wyndham Clark in the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. Then, Cantlay had not been wearing a cap that day and was being roasted for the same throughout the match. At the crucial 18th hole, he buried his 43-foot birdie putt to win the hole and clinch the match. With that, his caddie, Joe LaCava, started waving his cap to mock the European fans.

However, he continued to wave it even as McIlroy prepared to make his birdie to take a halve of the match. But with the distraction, he missed the hole and lost the match for good. The Irishman, for obvious reasons, did not take it well and confronted not just LaCava but also his best friend and Justin Thomas’ caddie, Jim “Bones’’ Mackay, in the parking lot. Then, Donald had talked about discussing the incident with McIlroy and requested to play with respect, no matter what. This time, Bradley had similar thoughts.

“I mean, I think it was a little bit disrespectful, but Justin Rose told me after on the green that they had talked it out,” Team USA captain Keegan Bradley said after the match. “I talked to Bryson. In sports, golf, it’s blown into this huge thing. It happens in sports all the time. They seemed fine after the round. You know, it’s super passionate out there, especially for — well, for both sides. But from what I understand, everything was fine after the round. These sort of things happen when you’re playing for your country.”

When all was said and done, the war of words didn’t really lead to anything. Despite the crowd’s full support, it was a bit too late for Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler to turn things around. And the rest of the matches also barely helped Team USA’s efforts to make a comeback.

Bryson DeChambeau & Co. continue to struggle despite showing fighting spirit

By no means did Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler perform badly as a pair. In 16 holes, they scored 7 birdies and an eagle. In strokeplay format, they would have been at the top of the table with a score of 9-under. But the fact is, Tommy Fleetwood & Justin Rose were just too good on Saturday. They managed to score 11 birdies in 16 holes.

“Bryson and I did some good stuff out there,” Scheffler said about their performance on Saturday. “We were into a tough matchup today. Those guys played great. They made a ton of putts and really tip of a cap to them. They played better than we did.”

But the two top multi-time major winners were not the only underperforming Team USA players in the Fourball matches. Justin Thomas & Cameron Young also failed to make an impact, despite all the abuse their opponents, Shane Lowry & Rory McIlroy, faced from the spectators at Bethpage. Sam Burns & Patrick Cantlay also failed to score a point for the American side. In the end, Team USA ended the day with 4.5 points as compared to Team Europe’s 11.5. This is the highest Ryder Cup score a team has achieved after two days of action. Going into Sunday, Bryson DeChambeau & Scottie Scheffler will have a tall mountain to climb if they want to make a comeback.
