Just 15 feet from the cup, Shane Lowry needed a birdie on the 18th at Club de Campo Villa de Madrid to make the cut. After a tough start to the 2025 Open de España, this was his final shot to stay in. He struck the ball, and it rolled over just 1 foot away from the hole. That ended the Irishman’s fate in Spain two days before the tournament will officially conclude. Frustrated with his performance, Lowry did something his close friend, Rory McIlroy, did during the 2025 PGA Championship.

After nearly making the cut, Lowry’s 1-over 143 in two rounds wasn’t enough to keep him in the $3.25 million event. His 3-under 68 on Friday showed promise. Unfortunately, he still fell short of the par cutline. This led him to make a risky move after the game in an attempt to avoid attention. Yet, this has been a risky choice that ironically drew as much attention as the performance itself.
Playing his first event since his Ryder Cup heroics at Bethpage, Shane Lowry followed McIlroy’s script. After missing the cut, he skipped the post-round press conference. This was a move reminiscent of Rory McIlroy’s media silence after tough outings earlier this season. There’s been no confirmation of whether Lowry remained at the course or headed straight back to his hotel, but one thing’s certain. Reporters won’t be getting answers from him this week.

So far, Lowry has not committed himself to the Genesis Championship that will be played in South Korea after the trip to India. However, beyond that, Shane Lowry and other top European golfers will certainly participate in the two DP World Tour play-off events. Even if it’s nearly impossible for him to topple McIlroy off the top of the table, Lowry would really push for his first win in the 2025 DP World Tour Championship.
The 2025 DP World Tour Championship, scheduled for November 13–16 at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, is set to be a thrilling conclusion to the season. With a $10 million prize fund and a field of elite golfers, including defending champion Rory McIlroy, the event promises high stakes and intense competition. As Lowry continues his journey through the season, the championship in Dubai looms large, offering a final opportunity for redemption and glory.
