‘Take Advantage of the Rules’: After Massive Scrutiny, Phil Mickelson Accepted His Mistake and Offered to Withdraw From a Major Championship in 2018

Phil Mickelson has been playing professional golf for decades now. The golfer is well aware of the rules and regulations one has to follow to play in a tournament. In fact, he knows them so well that once he figured out how to take advantage of these rules. But being the honest person he is, he took responsibility for his actions and offered to step back from the tournament.

Phil Mickelson is one of the most talented players in the golf community. The six-time major winner has millions of fans for his golfing skills and has made tons of records on the field. And winning multiple tournaments signifies how well the golfer knows about how the game works. But despite all his knowledge, he once made decisions that led him to feel guilty and offer to withdraw from a championship.

There are times when a person knows he would be punished for doing something he is about to do. But the person still chooses to go the wrong way, knowing that it would benefit him towards his main goal. For Mickelson, his goal was to win the 2018 US Open. And for that, he decided to make some conscious mistakes that come along with penalties, even after being aware.

As things turned out, Mickelson tried to intentionally hit a moving putt on Saturday on the 13th green. And as a result, the golfer was charged with a two-stroke penalty. His final score was 81 at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.

Explaining his planned mistake, Mickelson said“It’s meant to take advantage of the rules as best as you can. In that situation, I was just going back and forth. I would gladly take the two shots over continuing that display.”

But to his surprise, fans and everyone around him started to talk about how his decision was not smart. Rather, it was his attempt to find loopholes in the system. And as a result of the general frustration among the fans and the officials, Mickelson decided to accept his mistake. The golfer also wanted to make things right, and hence, offered to withdraw his participation from the tournament. And this was shared by his wife, Amy Mickelson.

“You know it’s not his finest moment,” Amy said“But hopefully he’ll learn from it. Like anybody, good people make mistakes.” She also explained how the golfer had been receiving questions about his move from the media as well as his fans while he signed autographs. And that might have added up to the realization of the mistake he made.
