As things turned out, Mickelson tried to intentionally hit a moving putt on Saturday on the 13th green. And as a result, the golfer was charged with a two-stroke penalty. His final score was 81 at the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.

Explaining his planned mistake, Mickelson said, “It’s meant to take advantage of the rules as best as you can. In that situation, I was just going back and forth. I would gladly take the two shots over continuing that display.”

But to his surprise, fans and everyone around him started to talk about how his decision was not smart. Rather, it was his attempt to find loopholes in the system. And as a result of the general frustration among the fans and the officials, Mickelson decided to accept his mistake. The golfer also wanted to make things right, and hence, offered to withdraw his participation from the tournament. And this was shared by his wife, Amy Mickelson.

“You know it’s not his finest moment,” Amy said. “But hopefully he’ll learn from it. Like anybody, good people make mistakes.” She also explained how the golfer had been receiving questions about his move from the media as well as his fans while he signed autographs. And that might have added up to the realization of the mistake he made.
