In his three decades of professional golf, a lot has changed for Phil Mickelson. Apart from the difference in his resume, the year 2022 saw Mickelson change his golf Tour after he made the jump to LIV Golf. However, along with his move, Lefty also happens to have grown a beard for the first time while being in the limelight. But what’s the reason behind Phil’s facial hair?

Earlier this year, Lefty decided to end his tenure on the PGA Tour and have a fresh start with LIV Golf. Phil signed with Saudi-funded Tour for a reported amount of $200 million. Though his move to the Breakaway Tour made headlines, Mickelson’s new look caught a lot more attention. Let’s find out why the Hall of Famer has decided to grow a beard.

Phil Mickelson is waiting for his wife’s command to shave

During the 2022 US Open, the LIV Golf defectors were participating in their first Major since the maiden LIV Golf event in London. Many players were bombarded with questions regarding the lucrative Tour for their move, including Mickelson. However, one interviewer lightened the press conference by asking Phil if his beard will last much longer or has the golfer decided to shave it.

Phil responded by saying that his wife, Amy Mickelson has the final call on his beard. He said, “Amy liked it, so as long as she likes it, it’s here — and when she says it’s gone, it’s gone”. Being in the marriage for 25 years has led to the 6-time Major winner relying on his wife to make decisions for him.

The couple married back in 1996. However, they met four years prior at Arizona State University while Phil Mickelson was still competing in the amateur circuit. The couple shares three children together. Lefty decided to take a break from his professional golf career in 2009, to be next to his cancer-fighting wife.

Fortunately, Amy overcame the illness and saw her husband lift 3 more Major titles. This alone displays the devotion Phil has for his wife. So when it comes to shaving a beard, it’s just another way of showing his affection for his wife of 25 years.
