Apart from his exceptional golf skills, Phil Mickelson is known for his friendly banter and for trash-talking during events. However, the six-time major championship is also famous for his love for betting. Notably, a few years ago, one of his epic betting stories came to light, which, if nothing, will surely prove the same.

Phil Mickelson’s epic betting story

Jason Sobel wrote probably one of the most epic Phil betting stories back in 2021. He talked about an incident that took place in the 2013 Wells Fargo Championship when Phil invited caddies and media members on a Saturday night get-together. While walking down the 16th hole at Quail Hollow, Phil asked Sobel and his two colleagues, “Hey, are you guys coming Saturday night?” 

Phil had rented out a Wolfgang Puck restaurant just down the road. He had invited the caddies and other media personnel for the NBA, NHL Playoffs, and the highlight of the evening was the match between Floyd Mayweather and Robert.

Jason wrote how Phil got up just before the start of the fight and said, “Oh, and one more thing. Wagering is encouraged.” Phil again got up when the match ended and spoke about the next bout between Alexander Munoz and Leo Santa Cruz. Munoz had a terrific record of 28 knockouts in 36 career victories and was the favorite to win. As for Cruz, not only was he less experienced than Munoz but he was also stepping up on the weight class.

Phil offered another wager for the fight and Sobel ended up betting $100 against Phil. Which meant either he would take the money home, or he would indirectly end up paying for the drinks and food. In the end, Cruz won in the fifth round after the referee announced TKO victory in his favor.

Mickelson took money from everyone and said, “I’m really sorry about that” while also saying, “Man, I just got lucky,” to another person. When he approached Sobel in the end, he whispered, “Thanks,” as he put Jason’s money into his stack.

On the business end, the Lefty did not have the right finish. He ended one stroke behind the leaders, as a result, failing to make it to the playoff. He ended the event with an overall score of seven-under-par. Phil carded a final round of one-over-par, 73, and finished third at the event.
