With LIV Golf stars being allowed to take part in the BMW PGA Championship this week, the news has sparked massive criticism from the fans. However, several golfers have also shared their dismay with the decision to allow the lucrative Tour golfers to participate in the event. Former World number 1, Jon Rahm, spoke about his disapproval of the decision and denounced the LIV Golf defectors.

The 2022 BMW PGA Championship is set to take place at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England. The tournament will commence on 8th September and end on 11th September. The highly anticipated tournament is a flagship event of the DP World Tour.

While addressing the media at Wentworth, Rahm talked about his friend Alfredo Garcia-Heredia, a DP World Tour player who has played all through 2022, yet was denied a spot in the tournament. He further discussed that the LIV Golf players “don’t care” about the Tour or the event.

Jon Rahm has been vocal about his censure for the Saudi-backed Tour. The 2021 US Open winner, who will be competing at this week’s DP World Tour event, didn’t hesitate again while talking about the defectors.

Rahm talked about how the LIV Golf stars are ungrateful and don’t care about the Tour or the event. He said, “It doesn’t hurt me but it does bug me that somebody who has played – it’s 20 DP World events this year, cannot be given the opportunity to play a flagship event because some people that earned it, to an extent, are being given an opportunity when they couldn’t care any less about the event. They don’t know. They don’t care”.

The Spaniard further talked about how the defectors are only competing in the event to rise through the World golf rankings. Jon Rahm said, “They don’t know the history of this event. They are only here because they are trying to get world ranking points and trying to finish in the top 50, and that’s clear as day. So to me, there’s a difference”.

A win or good performance at LIV Golf wouldn’t make much difference in the World Golf rankings, as the Tour doesn’t offer OWGR points yet. However, European golfers are utilizing the opportunity to participate in the BMW Championship as a way to earn some points. Whether the European Tour will change its rules in the future regarding the LIV Golf stars, only time will tell.

Is Jon Rahm’s disappointment justified? Let us know in the comments section below!
