Tiger Woods’ Beautiful Tribute to Charlie Sifford After Receiving Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019: ‘I Always Called Him ’Grandpa’’

On 2019, May 7th, Tiger Eldrick Woods, now the host of the 2022 Genesis Invitational, was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Donald Trump. It makes Woods the 33rd sportsman to be honored with the medal. Truly, a proud moment for him. Woods gave appreciation to a special person in his life during his heart-warming speech.

Tiger Woods is an 82-time winner on the PGA Tour. He is the former World Number One as well. However, what is incredible is that he is the fourth golf professional after the Golden Bear, King, and Charlie Sifford to win the medal. While giving his acceptance speech, Woods mentioned Sifford. It was a truly incredible one.

Woods said“I just want to say thank you, again. This is an honor. I know that I’m the fourth golfer to have received this award: the late Arnold Palmer, the great Jack Nicklaus, and Charlie Sifford, who is — I always called him “Grandpa,” because he was like the grandpa I never had.”

He added, “And I ended up becoming so close with him that I ended up naming my son, Charlie, after him. And so to have been chosen as the next golfer after Charlie is truly remarkable”.  Tiger’s words truly depict the amount of respect he has for Sifford as well as, how strong a bond they had with each other.

Woods also has a Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption in the event that he hosts, the Genesis Invitational. This year Aaron Beverly received the same.

What was Tiger Woods’ last major win?

Tiger received the Presidential Medal of Freedom after winning his 15th major championship in 2019 at Augusta National. He also won the 2020 Masters in emphatic style. The 46-year-old won the event with an overall score of 13-under-par, conquering the field with one stroke. It was the Tigers’ first major win in 11 years.
