The LPGA Tour heads to Wisconsin this week as the biggest and the best in women’s golf fight for a prestigious prize. They will all compete on the Erin Hills Golf Course for the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open Championship. Last year, fans saw the Japanese star, Yuka Saso, dominate the field same course to win the second U.S. Women’s Open of her career. She will have a number of golfers who could pose a threat to her title defence this year.
The likes of Nelly Korda, Lydia Ko, and Jeeno Thitikul are all favorites to win the event. Ko and Thitikul have been in outstanding form recently, and Korda will be hungry for her first win in 2025. While the favorites are evident, there are a few dark horses who can also pull off a shocker over the biggest names on the LPGA Tour. We’re here to explore those who also have a great shot at winning the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open Championship.

Hannah Green
A former one-time major winner herself, Hannah Green has shown some grit this season. Despite not winning so far, she has made 6 out of 7 cuts and finished in the top 10 thrice. The Australian golfer’s best finish came in the 2025 Founders Cup presented by U.S. Virgin Islands, where she ended tied in 4th at Bradenton Country Club. It has definitely been a while since Green last won a major when she captured the Women’s PGA Championship in 2019. However, the three LPGA Tour wins in 2024 prove that the 28-year-old is in great form right now. It is only a matter of time before Hannah Green opens her account this season. And it could very well be at the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open Championship.
Mao Saigo
For the first win of her career, Mao Saigo chose to pick the 2025 Chevron Championship a month ago. Kick-starting her winning streak on such a high, the 23-year-old will have all the momentum she needs to make it two in two this season. While a T31 finish in the 2025 Black Desert Championship presented by Greater Zion might not have been that impressive, Saigo has been on a break from the fairway for nearly a month since.

Perhaps the Japanese golfer was just taking a step back, or maybe she was preparing for another major triumph on June 1, 2025. Guess we will only know that after looking at where Mao Saigo lands on the leaderboard after the 4th round.
What’s your perspective on:
Can Yuka Saso defend her title, or will a dark horse steal the spotlight this year?

Brooke Henderson
The beloved golfer from Canada, Brooke Henderson, is also a former major winner. In fact, she has two prestigious titles under her belt. In 2016, Henderson won the Women’s PGA Championship by beating Lydia Ko in the playoffs. The 27-year-old captured the 2022 Evian Championship with a 1 stroke deficit against the field. This year alone, the Canadian golfer has made six cuts. Her best finish of a 9th-place tie came in the 2025 T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards. Unfortunately, that was the only top-10 finish she had. However, Brooke Henderson would be quite eager to get back to winning ways after spending over a year without a title. Knowing how great she can be when in form, it won’t surprise many if she hits the mark at Erin Hills Golf Course from May 29 to June 1, 2025.

Rose Zhang
Rose Zhang only returned from a nagging neck injury that kept her out of action for the 2025 Chevron Championship. She was also away from the fairway for a couple of months as she completed the winter semester of her communications degree at Stanford University. That means we’ve seen very little of what Zhang is capable of doing this season. So far, the 22-year-old has not had a season in which she has not won an LPGA Tour title since receiving her membership. The up-and-coming star is certainly capable of pulling off a blinder in big events. Having already missed one of the majors this year, the 2-time LPGA Tour winner will be even more hungry to impress in the upcoming major. She even discussed her strategy for tackling the challenges at Erin Hills in an interview with Brandel Chamblee. So it won’t come as a surprise if we see Rose Zhang lift the 2025 U.S. Women’s Open Championship.

Charley Hull
Charley Hull is probably one of the most athletic golfers on the LPGA Tour. But that has not helped her break her losing streak for over 2 years. She did break her LET winless streak just a few months ago in the 2024 Aramco Team Series Presented by PIF – Riyadh. So it’s not like Hull has forgotten how to win. In fact, the Englishwoman has also gotten really close to breaking the curse a few times recently. She was the favorite to steal the 2025 HSBC Women’s World Championship from Lydia Ko earlier this year. Her efforts in the 2024 ANNIKA driven by Gainbridge at Pelican also helped her finish second behind Nelly Korda. After so many close finishes, fans are expecting Charley Hull to finally cross the line and lift her third LPGA Tour title. The 2025 U.S. Women’s Open Championship is certainly a great event to do that.
