The PGA Tour has come under fire for its latest changes to its schedule. The announcement of designated events, which are supposedly no-cut events, has drawn stark criticism from fans and pundits alike. Days since the news became public, several lesser-known players have shown admirable courage in speaking up on the issue. The list has a late addition in veteran golfer Ryan Armour, who questioned whether the PGA Tour deserved the players’ loyalty itself.

Armour, who is due to tee up at the Players Championship, spared no words in his criticism of the PGA Tour. While referring to himself and more of the lesser-ranked players on the tour as “mules”, he believed that the designated events were suited to the needs of the game’s best players.

“Guys who keep their cards, they’re good players, but they’re not going to have a chance to play the playoffs. They’re not getting into any of the designated events.” Armour lamented. But the PGA Tour depended on their participation in other events, which further infuriated the golfer.

“But they want those players to go be mules for you at all the pro-ams, all the charity visits, all the hospital visits, and sponsor events. And we’re good enough to do that, but we’re not good enough to play in designated events like we did this year?” he questioned the tour.

Armour contemplates reasons for choosing LIV Golf

Furthermore, the 47-year-old and PGA Tour council member reasoned as to why the “mules” would grab a LIV Golf offer on the basis of a hypothetical example. “Say you finished 75th on the points list, just using that as an example. Yes, you had a really good year, but you don’t get in any of the designated events.”

“Why wouldn’t you take a LIV contract? You’ve just been told by the tour that you fought for and were loyal to that we don’t want you,” he bemoaned.

For the unversed, the PGA Tour has announced the formation of 13 regular-season, designated events. These competitions will feature a trimmed field of 70-80 players, each offering a purse of $20 million. Three of those events are set to be the three invitationals – the Memorial Tournament, the Genesis Invitational, and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
