Golf is a sport that, for years, has been played wearing polo shirts and pants. But sports are all about evolution, so in 2019, the PGA Tour committee decided to bring a little comfort to the sport. They allowed shorts for the pro-am and practice rounds. But our dear Phil Mickelson thought he had a huge hand in bringing in the change.

Professional men’s golf has traditionally been a sport in which players wear long pants, rarely revealing a glimpse of their exposed legs. the PGA Tour had never seen short-wearing players during pro-am and practice rounds before 2019. Mickelson, being his hilarious self, posted a photo of himself playing golf in shorts, slyly taking away the credit for the change.

Is Phil Mickelson, the reason behind the introduction of shorts in golf?

On one fine Monday in 2019, the PGA tour revealed that they will permit players to wear shorts during pro-am and practice rounds at tournaments organized under its jurisdiction. Even though long pants are still required for all official competition rounds, most of the golfers were on board with this new rule.

Golfers, who walk significant distances during their rounds, happily embraced the new rule. That’s why it’s so uncommon to see players sporting in shorts on the course. Phil Mickelson, known for making fashion statements on the golf course, expressed his approval of the rule change with a social media photo of himself in shorts.

Lefty’s tweet was captioned, The @PGATour just announced that shorts are allowed for pro-am and practice rounds. The word is they saw my Insta-structionals in shorts and felt this move needed to happen. Well played, sir. Well played!”

The PGA Tour’s Player Advisory Council Co-Chairman, James Hahn, announced the new rule allowing players to wear shorts during pro-am and practice rounds. Hahn removed his pants to reveal a pair of shorts, accompanied by fellow pro-Harold Varner III.

Mickelson flaunting his calves

Phil Mickelson posted a photo with a pun, but it instead prompted a widespread commentary on his athletic calves. His fans could not stop drooling over his calves. The PGA tour had given Phil more occasions to show off his perfectly muscular calves.

There has been a joke between him and Tiger Woods which started with Phil’s remark, “activating his calf muscles.”Back in May 2020, Bleacher report’s Twitter account shared a video. In that video Tiger was heard saying, “Yes ladies and gentlemen. This is what I have to listen to every time we play”.

What are your thoughts on the PGA Tour’s decision to allow shorts? Well, the golfers and the fans are loving this change. Drop your comments below and stay tuned for more such articles on our website.
