What is the playoff format for the 2025 BMW PGA Championship?

Should the scores remain tied after 72 holes, there is only one way the tournament will be decided, and that’s with a playoff. And if Saddier and Noren do face each other after regulation time, then it will be in a sudden-death contest. They will play the 18th hole as many times as they need to until one outscores the other to reign superior. And they will be awarded the 2025 BMW PGA Championship.

Interestingly, this will be the second week in a row that a DP World Tour event has gone into a playoff. Last week, the Amgen Irish Open was also pushed beyond the regulation 72 holes after Rory McIlroy shot an 18th hole eagle to tie the score with Joakim Lagergren. In the end, the Irishman defeated the Swede to win his second Irish Open title at the K Club. The European Tour is certainly delivering some exciting contests recently.

What happened when the tournament went into a playoff the last time?

The tournament first started being called the BMW PGA Championship in 2007. Since then, it has gone into the playoffs on six different occasions. It hasn’t been long since it was last played beyond the regulation holes. In fact, the 70th edition of the tournament, which was played in 2024, was pushed past 72 holes after Billy Horschel, Rory McIlroy, and Thriston Lawrence were tied at 20-under.

What’s your perspective on:

Will Adrien Saddier or Alex Noren handle the pressure better in a sudden-death playoff showdown?

Have an interesting take?

Back then, it was Horschel who came out on top. His experience of winning the tournament in 2021 may have played a role in helping him capture the title again. Based on that, if Adrien Saddier and Alex Noren face off on the 18th hole today, then Noren should also have an advantage at Wentworth. Only time will tell if he can capitalize on it and capture the title.
