Who is Devrath Das, the man behind Matt McCarty’s Success?
Das is far more than just a caddie carrying clubs on the PGA Tour. A Santa Clara University graduate, Das is part of the new-gen caddies.
Before turning full-time to caddying, he had quite a varied resume. Between 2016 and 2020, he worked as an Assistant Manager at an Indian restaurant. Although the job looks miles apart from what he does today, it did help him form a foundation. At the restaurant, Das handled everything from operations and technology integration to social media management. Later, he worked briefly as a Renewal Sales Representative at Barracuda Networks before committing fully to golf in January 2022.

But even before all this, his love and talent for golf were evident. During his high school years at St. Francis High School in San Jose, California, Das was the young boy who led his team to victory at the Viking Classic and finished runner-up at the 2015 California Junior Amateur.
How did Matt McCarty and Devrath Das start working together?
They were in the same 2016-20 batch of Santa Clara University pursuing different courses. While McCarty majored in Finance, Das was a Communications major with a minor in Economics. Hence, they have been friends for a pretty long time. They were also roommates living together in the on-campus housing units.
Eventually, both of them became a part of their uni’s men’s golf team from 2016 to 2019. They later moved together to an off-campus house along with some of their teammates. In fact, the group used to call their uni crib ‘The Clubhouse’.

Eventually, Devrath Das started caddying for Matt McCarty’s caddie soon after the latter turned pro in 2021. Soon after, he texted his old college buddy, requesting him to be on his side. Das accepted the role. In his words, “I came to Santa Clara thinking I was gonna be a professional golfer…did not last very long,” while speaking to associates from Santa Clara University.
He has only ever caddied for Matt. Ever since their partnership began, they have been trying to find the best form for McCarty’s skills. Their hard work finally started paying off in 2024 as McCarty won multiple trophies this year.
How has Devrath Das helped Matt McCarty’s game?
‘Oops,’ mouthed Devrath Das as he counted to three in an Instagram post shared by Matt McCarty. The three-count was indicating the triple Korn Ferry Tour event wins that McCarty secured in 2024. Matt McCarty won the Albertsons Boise Open presented by Chevron, the Pinnacle Bank Championship presented by Woodhouse, and the Price Cutter Charity Championship presented by Dr. Pepper.
All three of them came in a span of just six weeks, making him only the 13th player since 1997 to earn a PGA Tour card through the three-win promotion. Through it all, Das was there, watching him.
Das has always been animated when he is talking about his buddy, McCarty. Their on-course interactions also seem like it’s just two guys having a good time. It often seems like they forget that the whole world is watching them, in a good way.
This leads to the funny side of their relationship. During one such Korn Ferry event, when McCarty accidentally dropped his club on the ball and took a penalty, Das went ahead and got “Butter Fingers” stamped on the golfer’s wedge. “We haven’t dropped it since, I guess that’s good mojo,” McCarty laughed later.
These are the fun banters, with a touch of hard work that led McCarty to win his first PGA Tour victory in 2024 at the Black Desert Championship.
How much does Devrath Das earn as Matt McCarty’s Caddie?
While his financial earnings are not public, it is known that caddies earn $1,500 to $3,000 on a weekly basis. And of course about 5% of their player’s prize money if cuts are made, 7% for top-10s, and 10% for a victory.
Given McCarty’s achievements, with over $1 M earned on the Korn Ferry Tour plus the $1.35 M winner’s check from the Black Desert Championship, Das might have taken somewhere around $250k – $300k home.
Then in 2025, McCarty’s career earnings crossed $4.7 M, which had a T14 finish at the Masters. This makes Das’s cumulative earnings as his full-time caddie likely over $400k-$500k.
And then of course, he might be earning a good many cheques from all the sponsorships and branded apparels he wear on the course.
What is Devrath Das’s life like off the course?
Both Das and McCarty share the same friend group, so whatever Das does in his free time, McCarty is obviously a part of it. While the latter’s Instagram is filled with their golf triumphs, Das reflects more of the social side of himself and the pro. They are often seen going out with their friends to grab a drink, wearing matching outfits, and on vacations.
There is also a picture from their uni days where they were a part of the men’s team. Das also seems to enjoy other activities like table tennis, pretending to hunt (he is a vegetarian), and enjoying social gatherings. We can also see pictures of him from his graduation day at Santa Clara University.
He’s also appeared alongside McCarty in the PGA Tour’s fun social media content. This includes a “Newlywed Game” where they challenged each other to see who knows whom better.
Das now spends most of the year traveling the PGA Tour circuit exclusively with McCarty. He’s now part of a close-knit support system of the golfer that includes McCarty’s girlfriend, Madi Moore, and mother Deanna.
From the heartbreak of 2023 to celebrating their first PGA Tour victory at Black Desert Resort, the duo has seen it all, side by side. “To do it like this, I don’t know how you could expect this, to be honest,” McCarty said after his Black Desert win. “It’s just been a crazy last few months for me. It’s been a lot of fun.”
And fun, it seems, is exactly what defines their journey
