TPC Craig Ranch was drowning hours before the tee-off. The course was flooded due to heavy rainfall, with the first round of the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson under threat of suspension. It was not the first time the Maytime event had faced weather issues. Back in 2024, the tournament’s last round was pushed to Monday as it was plagued with bad weather suspensions. However, this time around, it’s not only the weather that is causing a commotion at TPC Craig Ranch. The reports of the bad weather revealed another daunting issue that may have led to nightmares for Jay Monahan & Co.
Along with a flooded field, the PGA Tour commissioner was also looking at a long list of withdrawals. Around the same time as the reports of the adverse weather, Will Zalatoris and Gary Woodland had also announced that they would be stepping back from the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson field. What is shocking is that they were not even the first ones to withdraw from the Texas event. Over the past few days, many other pros had decided to abandon the PGA Tour event. Alarmingly, the number grew to 12 players over the course of a week. That included the shocking exit of Mark Wallace midway into the first round after he sustained a neck injury.
The series of misfortunes doesn’t end there for Jay Monahan & his team. Going into the second round of the event, TPC Craig Ranch suffered further weather issues. The course saw so much rain and lightning that it seemed like Freddie Mercury himself was collaborating with the weather gods to give a rendition of his famous Bohemian Rhapsody verse. For 6 straight hours, the play was delayed and pushed back to the afternoon. Scottie Scheffler, who started his round in the morning, finished his 36 holes in the early evening. Many of his peers were still sitting in the dressing room, waiting for their turns.

At the close of play for the second day of the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, 18 PGA Tour players had still not teed off for the second round. At present, the PGA Tour website has stated that the round has been suspended and the remainder of the action will continue on Saturday, May 3, 2025. More than half the field still has to complete their 36 holes. The weather is also not getting any better.
As reports suggest, TPC Craig Ranch is bound to see some more thunderstorms on Saturday as well. With that, Scheffler’s pursuit to win his first PGA Tour title of the season will be cut short, albeit with him at the top. Still, it would be a nightmare for TV ratings, and Jay Monahan will have to face the consequences for it in the coming hours. That also raises the question: What more can go wrong for the PGA Tour commissioner over the next few days? Only time will tell.

Scottie Scheffler looks unstoppable despite long delays and suspensions
As mentioned, Scottie Scheffler started his second round in the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson in the morning. He teed off on Friday at 8:23 A.M. (EST) alongside Si Woo Kim and Jordan Spieth. The group began from the 10th hole and concluded their round close to the end of the day. Scheffler alone had a flawless day, gaining 8 strokes on his already impressive score. With six birdies and an eagle, he finished at 18-under par 124.
Mr. Inevitable currently holds a 6-stroke lead against the field. The only player who has been able to remotely get close to him is Sam Stevens. The fellow Texan, who interestingly turned pro in the same year as Scheffler in 2018, managed a 12-under par 130 after 36 holes.

It’s worth noting that this will be the last tournament the world no. 1 plays before visiting the Quail Hollow Golf Course. Scottie Scheffler has decided to skip next week’s Signature event, the 2025 Truist Championship. Close to him, he will be catching a break for challenging the field for the 2025 PGA Championship. If Scheffler ends up winning the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson, then he will gain enough confidence to become a threat to an in-form Rory McIlroy and the defending champion, Xander Schauffele, in the second major of the season.
Having said that, do you think Jay Monahan & Co. will still be able to manage all four rounds of the 2025 CJ Cup Byron Nelson? Let us know in the comments section.
