Now that Rory McIlroy is through with his major drought, it’s time for his close friend to also end his winless streak. It’s not like Shane Lowry hasn’t won anything. Last year, he teamed up with McIlroy to capture the 2025 Zurich Classic of New Orleans title. Individually, Lowry managed to capture the BMW PGA Championship of the DP World Tour back in 2022. However, on the PGA Tour, the Irishman has been winless since 2019. Despite all of that, he was confident, as he had mentioned how he was taking inspiration from McIlroy for the final round of the recently concluded Signature event.

The 2025 Truist Championship was the best shot he had. The 3-time PGA Tour winner sat at the top of the table tied with Sepp Straka. However, matching par in the final round meant Straka’s 2-under 68 was enough to secure him the title. Despite that, his friend, McIlroy, had a lot of positive things to say about Lowry’s recent form. When asked about his fellow Irishman’s resurgence since the 2023 Ryder Cup, Rory simply replied, “I’ve seen a big difference in Shane since he started living here full-time.” Lowry moved from his home country to Jupiter, Florida, only recently.

Speaking about living close to each other, McIlroy added, “We practice and play together so much at home. Just the back and forth from Ireland is tough. Even this time of the year, it’s still hard to practice over there. I just feel like I’ve seen such a big improvement in his consistency week to week because of where he lives, being able to practice in great conditions on great golf courses, get in games with the likes of myself or Rickie or JT or whoever lives down in Jupiter.”

Seems like he and Lowry have formed a small playing group with Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas, who both also live in Jupiter. They might also get the opportunity to play with Tiger Woods at times, considering Thomas and McIlroy’s friendship with him. That would have certainly helped Lowry improve his game.

Despite the 38-year-old’s failure to win the 2025 Truist Championship, carrying a prize purse of $20 million, his Zurich Classic teammate is still very hopeful about his future. Speaking of the same, McIlroy added, “It’s been amazing as his friend to see him play so well and so consistently. I’m going to hang around here and hopefully see him get the job done.”

Shane Lowry’s resurgence is evident if you compare his performances in 2023 to what he has achieved since. Two years ago, he was barely able to finish in the top 10, with only one T5 in the 2023 Honda Classic. In 2024, Lowry made 18 cuts and had 7 top-10 finishes. This season, after only 10 cuts, the Irishman already has 4 top-10s, including the runner-up finishes in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and the recently concluded Truist Championship. Moreover, having his family around just a drive away would also make it easier for him to focus on his game rather than worrying about them if they were in Ireland.

Shane Lowry’s recent PGA Championship record

Shane Lowry is no stranger to majors. In fact, in 2019, he beat a field that included Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, and Jordan Spieth to win the Open Championship. He also did so very convincingly with a 6-stroke lead against everyone despite going 1-over par in the final round.

However, Lowry has yet to win the PGA Championship in his career. He has had a few excellent performances over the last six editions of the event. The 38-year-old finished in the top 10 three times since 2019. The closest he came to victory was in 2021, when he finished tied in fourth, 4 strokes away from Phil Mickelson‘s -6. While he may not be the best bet to dominate at Quail Hollow this year, it won’t come as a surprise if Shane Lowry ends up challenging for the title by Sunday. Wouldn’t you agree?
