After many years of will he, won’t he, Xander Schauffele had hit a point in his career where everyone started thinking he may never win a major. He had an outstanding career before 2024, winning 7 titles in 8 years. Schauffele also came very close to winning the Green Jacket in 2019, narrowly missing out on it against Tiger Woods. But last year, the 31-year-old finally fulfilled the prophecy and lifted the Wanamaker Trophy at Valhalla Golf Course.
It was a monumental achievement for Schauffele, and the whole golf community wanted to celebrate it with him. While Collin Morikawa was not one of them as he had just lost the lead after ending the penultimate round at the top of the table, one of his associates certainly was. Schauffele’s caddie, Austin Kaiser, was recently interviewed for Beyond the Clubhouse. It began with him describing the atmosphere at Valhalla last year.
“It was chilling, to be quite honest. I know all of our friends were there, which was awesome. Walking up right past them, everyone was just crying. It was an awesome moment to be a part of. They’re all part of the team. All of our friends are what make him great, too. They all support him just like every one of his team members,” Kaiser said giving insights on what it was like to be walking beside Schauffele that day. Winning the first major of your career around your team, friends, and loved ones must have been quite “emotional” for everyone as the caddie confirmed.

Intrigued by the response, the reporter, Garett Johnson, inquired, “Which friends are you referring to specifically there?” Apart from his on-course crew, Schauffele had a few people surrounding him after he had won the 2024 PGA Championship. Interestingly, Kaiser replied, “I got two friends that we both (he and Schauffele) have together. They’re both caddies. One for now, Collin Morikawa, and one for Taylor Moore. His name’s Big Wave Dave, and Joe Griener. They actually canceled their flights. They were going to leave on Sunday. But they saw where we were on the leaderboard, and they were like, ‘We can’t leave that. We’re going to cancel our flights’.” Their decision to cancel their flights was certainly worth it as the two caddies saw their friend, Xander Schauffele, win his first major at Valhalla on May 19, 2025.

Having said that, where did Dave and Joe’s bosses finish on the table?

Where did Xander Schauffele’s friend’s bosses end up on the 2024 PGA Championship leaderboard?
As Austin Kaiser mentioned, David Pelekoudas was caddying for Taylor Moore at Valhalla last year. The American pro had an outstanding tournament, trying to chase Xander Schauffele’s lead. In fact, the 31-year-old had his best finish in the majors in the 2024 PGA Championship. He ended the tournament at T12 with a score of 12-under par 272.
Speaking of Joe Greinier’s boss, Collin Morikawa was in the same group as Xander Schauffele in the final round. The two went head-to-head for the title for most of the day. But while Schauffele rose to the occasion, Morikawa failed to impress as he ended the round on par. That pushed him down to the 4th position. However, Greiner was not caddying for the 2-time major winner back then. He was carrying the bag for Max Homa, who ended the event at T35. Homa finished the round much earlier, and Greiner was still on the course long after his boss’s exit. However, for the caddies to cancel their plans to see their friend win must have made Xander Schauffele’s win even sweeter.
What’s your perspective on:
Was Schauffele's victory sweeter because of the emotional support from his friends and caddies?
