“Greatness and Humbleness Have Allowed Rafael Nadal to Win So Much” – Carlos Moya

Up until 2017, Rafael Nadal was primarily being coached by his uncle, Toni Nadal. Since then Nadal has been coached by former World No.1, Carlos Moya. During their partnership which is still continuing, Nadal has notably won 5 grand slams.
Carlos Moya won the 1998 French Open. He is also very popular in Chennai, India where he won the Chennai Open an ATP 250 tournament presently known as the Maharashtra Open twice. He started coaching Nadal in 2016. 2017 was important for Nadal as he was returning from a wrist injury and had a horrid 2016. Moya hence has been pivotal in Nadal’s strong return.

Attending an Instagram live session Moya spoke about his training methods with Rafa. Emphasizing on having a positive approach towards Nadal, he helps Nadal analyze the opponent, reminding Rafa what the opponent does best and what he does best.
“I try to analyze those losses, and fortunately Rafa is very methodical as well. He is very observant and loves to watch matches and find solutions. Once we have done that Analysis. We talk it through and try to give him positive messages. “ said Moya.
Moya always wants to stay positive. He bombards Nadal with positive words and messages.
“I try to navigate it positively. I don’t believe in focusing on the negative and try to have a language where of course one has to be aware of the rival’s strength, but appreciating his own as well.” said the coach.

Speaking on Nadal’s attitude, Moya says he is too humble. He credits his humbleness for his success. He has won so much and remains motivated whether its a smaller tournament or the first round of a grand slam.
“Rafa is maybe a little too humble when facing players of his level which right now there are only two. Greatness and humbleness have allowed him to win so much. “

Carlos Moya doesn’t try to change too much with Nadal. He just wants to keep it simple and change smaller things. Moya said he is content if he can help Rafa win a few points which can change the match.

Nadal is currently in his hometown Mallorca, Spain. He is spending time with his family and celebrated his 34th birthday recently. Nadal, like Novak Djokovic, has not given a yes to participate in the US Open. He doesn’t want to take any risk of traveling to the US currently. Nadal is the defending champion at the Flushing Meadows having defeated Daniil Medvedev in the final in 2019.
