A stellar season for Malachi Toney

In the first week of December, Toney made it official with the Miami Hurricanes. He is now part of Mario Cristobal’s talented wide receiver room. And obviously, the young chap has created an identity for himself that allowed him to fall under Miami’s radar. According to the 247Sports ranking, Toney holds the No. 52 player at his position in the nation and the No. 44 overall prospect in the state. His talents do all the talking as the young chap is known for his elite hands, catching nearly every ball thrown at him. In high school football, he even led No.23 American Heritage with a 40-31 win over Jones in the 4A state championship. He came up with some interesting stats – he completed 15 of 18 passes for 188 yards and had two total touchdowns. That’s when MaxPreps thought of honoring Toney.

They are an online source for all things related to high school sports. It has now been their ritual to release an annual list of top players covering each of the 50 states. This time the American Heritage High School’s wide receiver Toney won the title: Florida High School Football Player of the Year. The WR led the American Heritage Patriots to a 12-2 record while at the same time gathering 58 receptions, 12 touchdowns, 28 career touchdowns, and 1,008 yards. A few days back, he had landed another award.

How Mario Cristobal finally cleared the Malachi Toney hurdle

Toney is gearing up to play the East vs. West matchup at the Alamodome in San Antonio on January 11, 2025. Before that, the nationwide Road to the Dome tour honored 100 Navy All-Americans. It was obvious that Toney would find himself lucky to win the award. The All-American Bowl Selection Committee selected him. On December 4, he was honored during the virtual jersey presentation.

Now that’s how Cristobal and Co. found themselves to be lucky. With Toney, it has been an on-and-off relationship. That’s because Toney had de-committed from Miami on October 3. But again, he changed his mind and thought of landing with the Hurricanes. So, finally, on October 28 he recommitted. At the beginning of December, Toney’s mates, running back Byron Louis, signed up with Florida Gators while safety Xavier Thomas went with Florida State.

However, Malachi Toney was not in attendance after delaying his eventual signing. Finally, two hours after the signing ceremony, Mario Cristobal broke the silence that the player had cleared all the paperwork and would finally don the orange jerseys. So it has been a bumpy ride, but it was all worth it. Miami now sees him as the next Cam Ward!
