Russian star Daniil Medvedev had an incredible 2019 season that saw him win 2 Masters 1000 titles. In addition to those wins, he also reached the final of the 2019 US Open where he lost to Rafael Nadal in what was one of the best matches of the year.

The 2019 US Open final lasted almost 5 hours where Daniil Medvedev pulled off an amazing comeback. He was 2 sets down against Rafael Nadal but he managed to win the next 2 to force a decider. However, he lost the last set 6-4.
In a recent interview with Eurosport, he was asked about this defeat and whether he was unhappy about it. He replied by saying,

“Not really because if I come back to the match, I don’t think that there was something I could do better. Of course, we can always find one shot. I think I had a break point at 5-4 in the fifth and I missed a forehand and there I could have come back to the score and maybe win. But no, it’s a super small detail.”

He went on to compare this with another match that he played against Rafa at the 2019 ATP Finals. In that match, He was up 5-1 in the deciding set and he lost the match. He said,
“It’s different than winning 5-1 and going completely nuts inside your head and losing the match, because of this. At the US Open, I think I did everything I can. As a competitor, I’ll always love to win, so I was super disappointed to lose it and my first Grand Slam final I wanted to win it. But it’s not possible to change that.”

Through his performance at the 2019 US Open, Medvedev showed the world that he can challenge the best players in the world. Many are expecting him to win a Grand Slam very soon. And hopefully, he will be able to do that when the ATP Tour returns in August.
