Recently, former F1 driver David Coulthard spoke on a few subjects pertaining to F1’s future. He touched upon Sebastian Vettel and his exit from Ferrari and what next for him. Some crazy rumours associated the German with Mercedes, possibly partnering Lewis Hamilton. However, Coulthard does not believe that that will come to pass.

“I think that would be a mistake for Mercedes,” he said. “In Lewis, they’ve got someone who can win Grands Prix and Championships. To bring Seb in there because you think that that will raise Lewis’ game… it’s very difficult.”

“If you look at these exceptional performances in sport, serial winners, I don’t think he needs the friction of a four-time world champion to get the best out of him. I think Vettel could be disruptive to the team.”

What else did he say about Sebastian Vettel?

According to the Scotsman, if Vettel offered his services for free, the Mercedes board may take it into serious consideration. To them, it would be a marketing stroke of genius to field a German driver in the team. However, David Coulthard just cannot imagine Sebastian Vettel donning the Mercedes overalls.

In other words, the pairing of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton seems like the best partnership to win another Championship. Coulthard concluded, “Both drivers can’t win, there’s never been a dead heat in a Grand Prix, so you’re only going to end up with problems that history have shown when you have two strong personalities in one team.”

Expanding on that further, one only has to remember the last couple of times Lewis Hamilton faced a worthy adversary. In his rookie season, Hamilton partnered defending champion Fernando Alonso and everyone knows how that ended. Then, in 2014, he partnered Nico Rosberg and their partnership soured over the years, leading to the latter’s retirement in late 2016.
