Following Pierre Gasly’s brilliant performance to finish 6th, Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost believes that the Frenchman is now “a mature driver”. The praise came pouring in after he scored his third top 10 finish of 2018 at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Earlier, he had finished fourth in Bahrain and seventh in Monaco. Gasly qualified sixth after a soaking wet qualifying session and managed to hold onto it until the end.

Now, 26 of Toro Rosso’s 28 points has been scored by the 22-year-old. Toro Rosso boss Tost admitted that they were competitive right from FP1. Gasly was a constant presence in the 10. This was what made Tost believe that Sunday was their day to bag a good points haul.

He confessed that he was unsure if sixth position in qualifying was even a possibility. However, they enjoyed a good qualifying session in tricky conditions. It just went on to show that the car was very competitive in the wet. The Austrian was happy that both drivers did a solid job.

Gasly made a good start and defended his sixth position well. He then proceeded to bring the car home without so much as a scratch. Tost was impressed with the way Gasly controlled the race. He was able to go faster when needed and managed his tyres and fuel well.

Tost was also delighted that Toro Rosso were able to capitalise in Monaco and Hungary. The two circuits are places where the Honda power deficiency is not so prevalent.

However, he will be wary of the likes of Spa and Monza. Especially since both are high speed races and they may be vulnerable there.

He further explained that the team improved the car’s performance. However, the main issue is that their rival Haas and Sauber have improved even more.
