India Tops Medal Tally in Asian Athletics Championships 2017

The Asian Athletics Championships 2017 concluded on Sunday in Bhubaneswar with the hosts winning a grand total of 29 medals. Indian athletes led by Swapna Barman, won 5 gold, 1 silver and 3 bronze medals on the final day of the championship. The athletes began their winning streak right from day one with 7 medals. On day two of the championship, the India contingent came away with another 8 medals, taking the tally to 15.

This is India’s best ever performance in the Asian Athletics Championships. the only real threat to India’s position on the medal table was China, but they had to settle for 2nd. Barman had secured 5932 points in the women’s heptathlon to take gold. Another athlete Neeraj Chopra, competing in the javelin throw event, threw a 85.23 to bag gold, Davinder Singh Kang took bronze in the same event. Women’s 800m winner Archana Yadav was delighted with her performance ” It is my first international medal at the senior international level, so I am very happy. I thank my God, my coach and my mum,”

“I am preparing for the World Championships, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. I want to win more medals,” she added. India’s final medal tally consisted of 12 gold, 5 silver and 12 bronze. China was second with 8 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals. Kazakhstan was third with 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
