Australia has banned outdoor gatherings of more than 500 people in a bid to tackle the spread of coronavirus. Although large crowds of people still mustered to beaches across Sydney, flouting advice to stay inside. Images from Bondi Beach in Sydney showed that swimmers, surfers and sunbathers packed in huge numbers onto the sand.

Furthermore, people are queueing to get in the grocery stores to stock up the daily use items. The lines stretched for hundreds of metres in some cases, as the shoppers try to keep their distance from one another.

However, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had let rip at the stockpilers who stripped supermarket shelves amid coronavirus crisis. The surge in panic buying induced unprecedented changes in consumer behaviour in the nation.

“Stop hoarding,” Morrison said. “I can’t be more blunt about it. Stop it. It is not sensible, it is not helpful and it has been one of the most disappointing things I have seen in Australian behaviour in response to this crisis.”

“That is not who we are as a people. It is not necessary. It is not something that people should be doing,” he added.

The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Australia went above 1000. As a precautionary measure, the NSW government announced any beach with more than 500 should be closed.
