“Just a Matter of Time for Me at Wimbledon”: Stefanos Tsitsipas Draws Similarities With Idol Roger Federer

The next couple of months are crucial for World No.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas. He is not only among the favorites for French Open 2021 but is also a contender for Wimbledon Championships. Tsitsipas sees himself as the successor to Roger Federer and hence feels he can soon do it at Wimbledon.
In a recent interview, Tsitsipas said that his tennis has a lot of qualities similar to Federer’s style. Hence he believes he could soon make it big at Wimbledon this year.

“Roger inspires me, we both play the one-hand backhand, he’s also a very aggressive player. I think it’s just a matter of time for me at Wimbledon. I don’t think there’s a better tournament out there, it’s a surface that any player wants to thrive on and create amazing memories. Things will happen if I do the right things, it’s just a matter of time.”

Since Tsitsipas has emerged on the tour he has been rather insignificant on the grass court. He has played 15 matches on grass, winning eight and losing seven. Moreover, he has played at Wimbledon thrice, with the best finish of fourth round in 2018. Tsitsipas is on a two-match losing streak at the Championships. However, with his increased pedigree and prowess, 2021 could be different.

“This is going to be the most important tournament of the year for me. I love the grass, I see myself playing well on the grass. I’m aiming high, I’m going big this year on Wimbledon.”

Before Wimbledon 2021, Tsitsipas will play French Open 2021. He is the fifth seed and finds himself with two clay titles in the year as well. He is among the strong favorites to challenge for the title in Paris alongside Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

Many times before Tsitsipas has called Federer his idol. He even beat him when the Swiss Master was the two-time defending champion at the Australian Open 2019. Like Federer, he loves grass and might bring a strong challenge in London later in June.
