Willi Weber, who has known Michael Schumacher for more than 20 years, has spoken about his grief over saying goodbye.

Michael Schumacher, 49, has been unconscious since suffering a skiing accident in the French Alps in December 2013 after hitting his head on a rock.

He was placed in a medically induced coma after the accident and underwent two life-saving operations at Grenoble Hospital in France.

In 2014, he was taken out of his coma, but the truth about his medical condition has been kept largely hidden.

Now, the iconic F1 champion’s former manager says he has given up hope.

Speaking to a German magazine, Weber, who managed Schumacher for two decades, said he believed the seven-time champion wasn’t coming back.

“After a long period of mourning, I’ve put it to an end — I’ve closed it off,” Weber said.

“I would go crazy otherwise.”

In an emotional interview about his close friend, Weber said: “We had the best, most successful time together and spent a lot of time together for 20 years, through thick and thin.

“But we no longer have our fate in our own hands.”

The former Ferrari driver is said to be receiving round-the-clock care at his family home near Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

Schumacher’s family told fans they were grateful for their support in a rare public appearance in March.

The family have barely spoken since the horrific accident, but reports have come through the family intended to move him to Mallorca to continue his recovery there.

They said that Schumacher always wanted to move to Mallorca, but Weber insisted this wasn’t true.

“Michael never wanted to live in Mallorca, he didn’t feel good there,” he said.

“It wasn’t his dream island, even though many people pretend that he loved Mallorca.”
