Former F1 driver Jos Verstappen has dropped some major hints about his son Max Verstappen. This is largely related to Max’s Formula One future at Red Bull once his 2020 contract expires.

The 21-year old is the team’s undisputed lead driver, though his father believes that he may take a page out of former teammate, Daniel Ricciardo’s book. In other words, a future not involving the Aston Martin Red Bull Honda team may be on the cards.

Speaking to De Telegraaf, Verstappen Sr. said, “As it looks now, it is good for Max to stay with Red Bull. But we are watching very carefully how things go,”.

The comments were made in light of rumours that representatives from the Verstappen camp initiated contact with Mercedes’ Toto Wolff. In response to the claims, the Mercedes team principal admitted that he is good friends with Jos.

the older Verstappen continued, “We thought we would have a better chance this year. But Mercedes has a better engine and a better car.

“In the current situation, it is possible that Max will not win a race this year. In the long term we have to think about what we will do in the coming yearsThen it will be a guess as to what team you should be with,”.

In late 2017, Max Verstappen extended his contract with Red Bull to the end of 2020. Sadly in 2019, the Dutchman has not enjoyed a good season at all, with Mercedes romping away.

Next weekend, the F1 paddock heads to Monaco, where Max Verstappen had a poor qualifying run and crashed out. However, this time around, he is eager to put all that behind him and conquer the circuit at last.

According to Red Bull team boss, Christian Horner, “In the last 12 months since Monaco last year, he found another gear. His performance has been phenomenal and he has extracted every ounce of performance out of the car. He races so strongly.”
