McLaren CEO Zak Brown has said that they will wait before initiating talks with Fernando Alonso about his future. Brown is hoping that they can delay it until before the summer break.

As has been the case for the past few years, Alonso’s future is one of the main topics of discussion.

The Spaniard has been linked to a return to Renault, a team where he has won the world championship with, twice. Other rumours place the veteran with Haas, Ferrari and just about any other team up and down the pit lane.

In addition to that, there are whispers of Alonso moving back to an IndyCar seat, permanently.

But McLaren are keen to hang onto him, whether in F1 or outside it.

“I think our situation is the same as everyone’s,” said Brown. “It’s a little early in the season.

“Of course, we’re all talking to our drivers, probably talking to each other’s drivers to a certain extent up and down the pit lane.

“I think that we’re now back in Europe, it’s usually around the summer time that things start really taking shape as far as our conversations with Fernando.

“Just like last year, we decided to wait until about the summer time and I think Fernando will let us know what he wants to do here pretty soon.”

This weekend, the entire F1 paddock head to Montreal for the Canadian Grand Prix. McLaren have not had the best of starts but are slowly getting in the groove. They are quite proud of their B-spec car and are confident of challenging in the points regularly.

However, no team will be sitting idly and will be keen to introduce their own upgrades. Whatever the case, this  2018 season is set to be a good one for the fans.
