McLaren to Partner Mercedes for the 2021 Season

It is official! the McLaren team will reunite with Mercedes for the 2021 season. The McLaren-Mercedes deal is expected to run until the 2024 season as part of a long-term agreement. The agreement will bring McLaren and Mercedes together as customer team and power unit supplier for the first time since 2014.

Speaking about the impending reunion, McLaren CEO Zak Brown said, “This agreement is an important step in our long-term plan to return to success in Formula 1. Mercedes is the benchmark, both as a team and a power unit, so it is natural we would seek to secure a relationship with the company for the next phase of our journey.” “

McLaren Formula One team principal, Andreas Seidl further elaborated, that 2021 will be an important milestone in the team’s fight to return to the front. He also stated that although they were looking forward to the marriage, Renault’s contribution to the team has been valuable. So, McLaren will be aiming to continue their current partnership until the end of the season and the 2020 season.

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff admitted that Mercedes were delighted to renew the iconic partnership that lasted until 2014. The Austrian noted that the two share a rich history, but they will be looking into the future. He also said that McLaren have been steadily improving and getting back to their rightful place as front-runners.

With the Renault power, the team have put in impressive performances this season. Wolff hoped that this new long-term agreement marks another milestone for McLaren as they aim to take the fight to the sport’s top teams, including the Mercedes works team.
