Recently, Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer opened up in an interesting interview. The world no. 2 spoke about his wife Mirka Vavrinec. The two got married back in 2009 and had four children together.

Mirka herself is a former tennis player who achieved a career-high ranking at no. 76 in 2001. She retired from tennis in 2002 at the age of 24 due to a persistent foot injury. The 40-year old achieved a career best Grand Slam result at the 2001 US Open. She managed to reach the third round before losing to Justine Henin in straight sets.

Often, Roger Federer went to tournaments without Mirka and his children. He admitted that it wasn’t an ideal situation for him.

She is my wife,‘ said the 36-year-old. ‘It’s not good without her. It’s that simple. She is always there for me, in the good and bad times. She is naturally more focused on the children than on my tennis. Sometimes she doesn’t even know who I am going to be playing against.

I call her after the match and she asks, “Did you win?” She knows tennis inside out and she knows me really well. So she knows when I am feeling okay or not. She also knows that it takes to have success. That’s why she is precious, and my team knows that too.’

Federer was unfortunate to lose in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon to finalist Kevin Anderson. The World number 1 will be playing the US Open series in a bid to amass his 21st Grand Slam.

The next tournaments are the Rogers Cup in Toronto and the Cincinnati Open in USA. He is likely to participate as he is on the entry list. However, Federer has yet to confirm his participation.
