Domingo German has been something of a controversial figure in the New York Yankees organization over the years. After reports of domestic violence, the pitcher was involved in a Major League Baseball investigation. And as recently as yesterday, the Dominican player was accused of using a foreign substance on his ball. But the umpires ultimately decided that the allegations were unfounded.

The Yankees were up against the Minnesota Twins, and twice the pitcher was halted because his hands were tacky. German explained that it was rosin, a substance that was legally allowed. After the blip, German then continued his stellar performance and struck out a career-high 11 batters over 6 1/3 frames. As he exited the stadium, the crowds gave him a standing ovation. And later, he shared a heartfelt moment with his family.

Talkin’ Yanks shared a few pictures of German with his girlfriend and their kids. In one of the pictures, the family is sitting in a car, everyone with grins on their faces as the pitcher’s partner takes a selfie. The kids sit in the backseat.

The second picture shows German’s girlfriend holding a toddler while a boy stands behind her. Both have their backs to the camera and are wearing pinstripes to honor the Yankee player. What’s more, their shirts say, German, with his number zero featured below it.

These photos confounded some fans because of German’s past – particularly, the violation of the league’s personal conduct policy. Nevertheless, things look good now.

German’s jersey number change surprised fans immensely

Since teams have taken up the tradition of retiring jerseys, sometimes players resort to unconventional numbers. Ever since he joined the Bronx Bombers, German had worn number 55. But then the Yankees acquired Carlos Rodon with a six-year deal and he had always worn the number 55, except in San Francisco. It seemed like his luck would continue in New York because German moved to a new number. Zero.

It’s rare to see in MLB but not entirely out of the realm of possibility. An even number, and a single digit at that. The number was previously associated with former Colorado Rockies player Adam Ottavino. Now, German wears it proudly.
