Renowned veteran and MLB executive Craig John Counsell has been managing the Milwaukee Brewers since 2015. His contract is almost over, and he doesn’t seem very interested in renewing it after the Brewers’ belittling Wild Card loss. After leading the Brewers to five playoffs in his tenure of nine seasons with the team, one of the most successful managers in MLB history is now a free agent. He has been receiving a lot of attention since then. And he’s having the best time savoring it.

Counsell has seven years’ worth of rapport with David Stearns, the current New York Mets and ex-Brewers President. He has been planning on getting Counsell to join the Mets since his introduction to the team, and an offer was almost in the making. Craig might have given into that by now if only the Cleveland Guardians hadn’t intervened.

Council for the Counsell

The Cleveland Guardians are again on a search for a manager after Terry Francona stepped down this season, serving 11 seasons. An apparent rival of the past, Craig Counsell is “at a Progressive Field” for his interview with the Tribe, according to an anonymous report to the AP News. The club has chosen not to go public with the announcement just yet. Keeping it low to shoo off rival teams like the wealthy Mets is a great tactic to follow, especially when it comes to one of the winningest managers in MLB.

According to Jon Heyman of the NY Post, the nine-year Brewers manager has already been offered a re-sign contract by the Brewers, but he chose not to deal with it right now. The 53-year-old was considering moving to New York with his family, which would’ve added to the speculation of him being a Mets manager soon. Despite them having pretty deep pockets to afford his expectations, his Mets future now seems uncertain.

Craig has been making waves across the MLB franchise with his goal of setting a higher standard for their managers’ salary designs. The structure has reportedly deteriorated much over the past few decades, compared to the $8 million figures offered to the likes of Joe Torre during his Yankees reign. Will the Guardians be able to afford his ambitions? Or will the Mets trump it up with an extra 0 or three?

Regardless of which team wins the Counsell competition, it’s good to know that the fans won’t see him stepping down from the game anytime soon. Cheers to another chance of great signing—and another, to the magnanimity of the Craig Counsell boon!
