Battling a disease is never easy. Just hearing the word ‘cancer’ is scary for most people, and Washington Nationals pitcher Chad Kuhl was no different. The 30-year-old was in the process of signing onto a Major League Baseball team when he received the news. His wife, Amanda, had breast cancer. The couple, parents to a 2-year-old, wanted to expand their family. But what was supposed to be a routine gynecologist appointment brought horrible news.

Everyone takes this news differently; some cave under the what-ifs of the future while some fight to survive. Amanda Kuhl firmly falls in the latter category. Never one to back down from anything, the former beauty queen is giving it her all. Be it chemotherapy or parenting, Kuhl feels proud of her for not letting herself get overwhelmed. In fact, in addition to the already exhausting lifestyle cancer can give anyone, Amanda wants to help others. On her path of spreading awareness, she’s already doing an amazing job.

The Washington Nationals pitcher and his wife are raising money for ‘Cancer Isn’t Kuhl’

On February 4, Kuhl signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals. On March 30th, he made it to the Opening Day roster, making his MLB debut with the team. Then, almost a month later on April 28, the Kuhl couple launched the ‘Cancer Isn’t Kuhl’ campaign. In its first two weeks alone, it raised $30,000 for breast cancer research and treatment.

And as of yesterday, Amanda Kuhl announced in an Instagram post that they had raised a total of $65,000 then. “As of 9am today, we raised nearly $65,000 for breast cancer treatment and research. SIXTY FIVE THOUSAND DOLLARS. Absolutely amazing. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you,” she wrote.

The Kuhls still hope to have a bigger family someday

What started out as a journey to expand their little family has now become a movement to raise awareness about an awful disease. But the Kuhl couple isn’t giving up so easily.

Living in the 21st century has a lot of pros and cons and one of the biggest benefits is certainly the cutting-edge technology that humans get to experience. One such wonder is the egg-freezing process which hopeful mothers can take advantage of. Amanda Kuhl is no different and went through that process before starting chemotherapy. The couple still hopes that Hudson Kuhl, their two-year-old son, can have siblings.
