‘Be careful with your words. Once said, cannot be forgotten’ they say. The New York Yankees learned this the hard way; an incident from 2022 comes to mind. In an attempt to improve their playoff chances, Brian Cashman decided to move the so-called ‘not-post-season-material’ around. Well, the “You gotta rob Peter to pay Paul sometimes” logic didn’t work after all.

This is about the Yankee’s homegrown talent, Jordan Montgomery, who was moved to the St. Louis Cardinals because Cashman thought he was not fit to play Octobers. Ouch! Soon after though, ‘Monty’ went on to win the World Series. The Yanks didn’t see that coming.

Is the Bridge Between Jordan Montgomery and the New York Yankees Burned?
As of today, the NYY are in need of a pitcher to pair with their ace Gerrit Cole and they are considering a reunion with the 31-year-old. However, Cashman’s words seem to sting even now. He said, “We made some tough decisions and some tough recommendations. We traded a quality starter and homegrown player in Jordan Montgomery that was obviously doing well for us. Knowing that you have to give to get, and we were looking to satisfy an area of need but you were going to have to wait on it.” And with that, bridges might have been burnt.

Monty who clearly wasn’t doing so bad in the Bronx, shared his view, hiding his confusion. His words were, “They might have given up on me, but I think it was the best thing for me to get to the Cardinals and get set up with Mad Dog. Our pitching philosophies are much closer”. Nevertheless, the matter at hand would be solved only if the Yanks could sign him with a team-friendly deal. Afterall, he has been one of the best pitching prospects that the Yankees have developed in their farm system. Plus they know how he plays in the Yankee stadium.

There was briefly a consideration when Ken Rosenthal mentioned that the Yankees have considered signing Montgomery again, “at least internally”. But that thanks to the missteps from the past, that train has already left the station.

What Had Exactly Happened?
One thing to keep in mind in this situation that the Yankees had to up their defense in center field defense. With that, two of the team’s biggest mistakes under the general manager’s supervision occurred. Cashman decided to trade for Joey Gallo and offer Aaron Hicks a seven-year extension. This was not merely a “trade”. This was the creation of a Yankees nemesis in Monty.
Montgomery was taken aback by the news, and teammates were vocal about their displeasure too. Not to mention, Montgomery was one of their most successful starting pitchers in the Bronx. While it’s not worth crying over spilt milk, it would be interesting to see what Cashman does next in order to reverse the effects of the cause he bungled.
