The New York Yankees are battling a torrid season. After winning a few games lately, they have again lost their shape, undergoing a three-game winless run. Both pitching and batting have let the team down, losing by a large margin. Because of this, no one is happy, including the former Yankees’ veteran David Wells, who showed his displeasure on the Old Timers’ Day.

Wells was at the Bronx stadium to celebrate the 1998 World Series win. Many former Yanks stars, including Derek Jeter, joined him at the stadium. It was a big day at the office, but it did not stop him from sharing his thoughts on the 2023 season. While taking a stand against Nike, the 2x World Series champion addressed the reasons behind the Bombers’ downfall. The 3x All-Star’s voice resonated with the fans, who echoed sentiments akin to the critique of the 27-time champions.

David Wells Hides the Nike Logo While Reflecting on Different Pinstripes

With time, the New York Yankees have changed their organizational structure on and off the field. But it seems former star David Wells is not happy with it, especially how the team has managed the poor performances and poor-performing players. According to the Talkin’ Yanks, Wells said, “Struggling players should be sent to the minors no matter how much they’re paid.”  In the conversation, he also elaborated on his rationale for this statement.

While supporting Brian Cashman, David said, “He’s doing his job, but he’s got a boss and all that, so he’s getting the blame for a lot of things.” Wells emphasized that blaming solely to the Yankees’ GM is wrong and pointed out that players needed to be blamed for the failure. Moreover, he criticized the team for not taking a firm stance against the players for performing poorly.

Amid all this Wells shared his experience from the past saying, “They did it to a lot of us back in the day, but you gotta send them out. I don’t care how much money you’re making. Send a message to them and let them go sit down there and think about it.” The 1998 ALCS MVP’s comments indicated that the Yankees’ soft approach is behind their downfall. Though it’s not the only thing he was unhappy about.

The former pitcher also stood against the $150 Billion Nike and termed them woke. He covered their logo with tape as a visible expression of his dissatisfaction. Well, it was an outburst from the Yankees World Series winner, but fans loved his honesty.
