Barry Bonds a baseball star that ruled the Diamond for years. He made and broke many records, adding to his astonishing baseball career. Though he was always in the news for his exemplary performances, controversies had an equal share of all his limelight. His aggressive nature and personality also contributed to it. And because of it, the Giants’ legend was always on the opposite side of people. A similar situation happened when Bonds became part of the conflict even after a game-winning knock.

Bonds had a difficult-t0-handle-character, who always connected with others on his terms. This characteristic put him against the media, which added to his negative image in public. And even after doing most things right, he ended up in the category of less liked personalities. The book, Love Me, Hate Me, Barry Bonds And The Making Of An Antihero sheds light on one such story.

When Barry Bonds Shunted Out the Media

In the sports world, every victory brings a hero into the picture. Barry Bonds was often the one. It also made him the attraction point of the media. But Bonds was not a big fan of it. Though he wanted to give the media its due share but within a limit and when it was crossed, he cared little. The same happened when the ‘hero’ Bonds hit a home in the last innings for a win.

When the media followed him, he was upset and shunted them out. The situation became a little tidy because of his distinct personality. On page 78, the author Jeff Pearlman describes the incident, taking the words of George Lopez.

Lopez account read, “One month later, Barry hit a home run off Phillies closer Steve Bedrosian in the bottom of the ninth to clinch a breathtaking 6–5 win.”

He adds, “It was the finale of a two-game series, and afterward the newspaper scribes in attendance gathered around Barry’s locker as he ate his post-game meal. “Move, mot**rfuckers. Do I come to your house at suppertime and bother you? Now get the f*ck out of my house at suppertime and when I’m done. I’ll talk to you.”

The story shows Bonds cares about himself more than anything. Though this was not the first case, it also added to his difficult relations with his teammates.

Dominant Bonds’ Difficult Friendships

Baseball is a team sport and demands a connection between teammates. Though with Bonds, the situation was a little conflicting. Although he was a skilled player but sometimes his self praise overshadowed the team spirit. The same happened when he was playing college baseball.

Even after the team lost by a big margin, Bonds credited himself for runs, without thinking of it as a teamwork. It resulted in conflicts which remained constant through his MLB career.
