Doing well as a multi-sport player at Rancho Buena Vista High School, Roberts displayed a niche interest in baseball, basketball, and football. Picking baseball as a career option, Roberts got himself admitted at UCLA and earned a respected spot on the team as a walk-on outfielder. His impeccable junior season guided him to his first taste of professional recognition. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1993.

But, his commitment to college baseball led him to decline and return for his senior year. Despite being drafted again in 1994 (this time by the Detroit Tigers) Roberts took off on a successful minor league career before ultimately making his Major League Baseball debut in 1999.
