Management is the base of a team. Managers are almost directly linked to the strategies and operations of a team. From game strategy to player roster, the skippers have the authority in it all. However, the manager hiring market is fiercely competitive, with rivals frequently recruiting successful managers from other teams. One can easily consider The New York Yankees and New York Mets as examples. These two teams from the Big Apple often have a hand in each other’s pies.

Both have been going through poor seasons for a few years, but their rivalry is still on. A recent incident of the Yankees bench coach’s Mets connection has raised the issue of the successful managers who have handled both clubs quite successfully.

Buck Showalter was one of the successful Yankees’ coaches from 1992 to 1995. While the Yankees suffered a lot until 92, with Showalter’s guidance, they did an outstanding job of a 12-win improvement from the year prior. The following two years were also great for the Bombers. Showalter had success here and there in later decades and apparently hoping for the best, the Mets hired him in 2021. However, the partnership didn’t work out too well because they parted ways after the 2023 season.

Next come Joe Torre and Yogi Berra. Torre is among some of the most successful Yankees’ managers, with four World Series titles from 1996 to 2007. But before that, he could be found in Queens from 1977 to 81, although his success was limited.

Coming to Berra, he was first with the Yankees (1964), then went to the Mets (1972-75), and again returned to the Yankees (1984-85). His abilities as a player were unquestioned but behind the scenes, the late slugger didn’t prove fruitful for any team. So, he was fired from both clubs in the middle of the season.

Finally, there’s Casey Stengel and Dallas Green. Stengel was another successful Yankees manager of all time. Leading the team from 1949-60, he witnessed seven World Series titles and 10 pennants over 12 seasons. However, the experience was different with the Mets. They lost 120 games in their inaugural season, which is still a disastrous record.

Green’s record was unfortunately lagged in both the boroughs. He led the Yankees for 121 games, resulting in a 56-65 record, and got fired. The Mets also had the same experience with him. They faced a 229-283 overall mark in 4 years. Despite the shared commonality, Dallas Green just didn’t click in New York.

After a hugely disappointing 2023, both teams are looking to build from the ground up. Once again, one team is meddling in the others’ affairs.

Since Showalter was terminated, the manager post has been vacant for the Mets. Recent news says that Carlos Mendoza interviewed for that position. Mendoza has been with the Bombers for 13 years as their bench coach, but, as his activities show, he is planning to leave the organization.

However, Mendoza didn’t only go to Mets for the interview. He also went to the Boston Red Sox and Detroit Tigers for managerial positions. Let’s see where he ultimately ends up.
