If Alex Rodriguez were to paint his journey on a blank canvas, it would make for one of the most colorful art pieces ever. The former New York Yankees shortstop has lived a life filled with crests and troughs and the one person who helped him navigate that rugged terrain was his therapist. But their relationship came to a sudden end.

A-Rod, known to be quite frank about discussing the uneasy aspects of his life, touched upon a sensitive subject on LeBatardShow. Upon being asked by Dan, the host, about how and why he was “trying too hard to be liked”, the 14X All-Star peeled another layer, revealing his twelve-year-long therapy experience with Dr. David and how it helped him through tough times. After all his therapist had “been such a source for me”.

Rodriguez On the Shocking Loss of His Therapist, Lessons He Learned, and More
Well, not all stories have a happy ending. On one hand, Rodriguez’s self-improvement involving “unpacking” and “rewiring”, facilitated by Dr. David yielded positive results. On the other, his therapist who guided him through dark days was too soon to leave. The 48-year-old revealed, “I lost my therapist a couple of years ago and he died out of nowhere, he had a heart attack and um that was an enormous blow to me because he’s been such a source for me“.

In his modest voice, Rodriguez went on to share some of the key instances with his therapist that changed his life. He started by talking about how his therapist helped him overcome his “emotional maturity of a 12-year-old a boy”. Then he added how seeking help led him to address the vacuum left in his life by his “pops” leaving at the age of 10. This led him to speak about his learnings.

Rodriguez generously shared his realization. He said that from his sessions with Dr. David “unpacking what happened when I was 10, 11, 12 years old and rewiring my brain that I did not need to search anymore, the big aha moment” was what led him to understand that he was enough and complete just the way he was.
