Are all the question marks looming over the New York Yankees finally resolved? They entered spring training with an uncertainty in their rotation, wondering who would fill the gap left by injured ace Gerrit Cole. Multiple names such as Will Warren and established veterans were in the mix. However, a young gun has emerged from the pack to bag the coveted fifth starter spot. 

Luis Gil, while not particularly the frontrunner at the beginning of the camp, his electric stuff capabilities and astounding spring training performance weave an optimistic story. It is worth highlighting a 2.87 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 15⅔ innings which caught the attention of important folks. Manager Aaron Boone praised Gil’s performance with the words, “Feel like the way Luis has thrown the ball, really from the jump, he’s certainly earned that with how he’s performed.”

Gil overtook the impressive rookie Will Warren for the spot. There are high chances that Warren, though not yet on the 40-man roster, could likely make his way to The Bronx at some point this season. But Gil made it through first. Other contenders were Cody Poteet, Clayton Beeter, and Luke Weaver, who displayed the Yankees’ surprising pitching depth in spite of offseason trades.

Though he has limited big-league experience and a Tommy John surgery recovery that he went through in 2022, Gil’s spring training dominance has earned the confidence of the Yankees. He is known to throw elite fastballs, usually in the triple-digits range. Additionally, he boasts a refined changeup and slider. But there are some factors to watch out for.

Let’s not forget that he hasn’t pitched extensively since his surgery. His records are just 29⅔ innings since 2022. And now, the Yankees are not placing any initial innings restrictions on him. Despite that, Boone reassured, “We’re in a better position to make better calls on that”.

With Cole sidelined for at least the first two months, Gil will take the mound for his first start next Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks. These sudden spring training developments add a layer of intrigue to the Yankees’ rotation. And this gives rise to some key questions.
