Rookies this year are stealing the show. Another rookie emerged victorious this award season. Apart from the fact that Corbin Carroll stands as the unanimous choice by BWAA, what’s surprising is that not many saw this result coming. Well, Nevertheless, his win has given the Arizona Diamondbacks a great advantage!

This 22-year-old is the only rookie to hit 25 homers and steal 50 bases this season. Apart from being the first-ever D-Backs rookie to take home this award, he ended a 25-year drought for his team since their genesis. He is now the 1st ever ROY for Arizona! How did this happen?

The Unexpected Results of Corbin Carroll Comes With An Advantage

Corbin Carroll, who was in his early 20s for most of the season, finished with a.285/.362/.506 line. That included 30 doubles, 10 triples, 25 home runs, and 54 steals in 59 attempts. Carroll contributed to the Diamondbacks’ postseason success, helping the team reach the World Series stage after 22 years of absence. With that comes an advantage. 

In addition to receiving all 30 first-place votes and a $750K bonus for finishing first place, Carroll’s win has given the D-backs a compensatory selection following round 1 of the 2024 MLB Draft. As long as a rookie was on the roster for their team on Opening Day, teams are allowed to receive bonus picks in the event that they win the award, according to new regulations put in place prior to the 2022 season. This 2023 debutant turned out to be a boon for the Snakes.

Following his spectacular rookie season, Arizona now has the chance to develop Carroll into a star player for 2024 and beyond. If the team exercises an extension of Carroll’s contract, he will be under the deal through the 2031 season. A win-win for both parties. That said, the Seattle-born outfielder‘s performance has not been a humble one so far, hence has him bound in a stellar contract.

Corbin Carroll’s Stellar Records Place Him in the Good Books of the Team

The D-backs signed him to a record eight-year, $111 million extension in 2022 after he made an impression in his first 32 games. If extended into his 9th year, he could potentially earn $154 million, per Sports Illustrated. Carroll had an incredible season, averaging 5.7 wins above replacement (WAR). Carroll went on to play a key role in the D-backs’ World Series run, recording the game’s last out against the Philadelphia Phillies in their National League Championship Series. Thanks to an amazing feat in September.

The magical game at Chase Field on 19th September against the San Francisco Giants propelled him to stardom. He became the first rookie and ninth player in history to record a 50th stolen base and 25th homer. Doing this in a single season placed him in the esteemed company of Barry Bonds, Hanley Ramirez, Ronald Acuna Jr. There are many other well-known figures on the list too.
