Additionally, the key question, as per Rosenthal, is this “Who is J.D. Martinez?” The answer to this is not as simple as you think. If he can recapture the form that made him a force last season, it could be a game-changer for the Mets. But Rosenthal draws elaborates saying, “If he’s the J.D. Martinez of last year, which was a really good player still, then that’s going to transform their offense. It’s going to elevate it to a place beyond where they’ve been.”
On one hand, Rosenthal seemed encouraged by the offensive signs he saw from the Mets recently. His words “I liked what I saw from them last weekend offensively,” highlighted the trust he has. Moreover, the hot bats of Michael Conforto and Francisco Lindor in addition to Martinez in the mix, the Mets’ lineup could become even deeper and more potent.

On one hand, Rosenthal is bullish on Martinez’s potential impact. On the other, he does acknowledges some lingering concerns. He admits, “I still worry about their pitching and it’s going to be a concern”. The Mets’ pitching staff has not been their strongest point in the recent past. But the uncertainty is how they fare alongside the revitalized offense. That’s a detrimental factor in their success.

Now, only time will tell if Martinez can live up to the hype. But one thing’s for sure: his presence adds a new dimension to a team with World Series aspirations.
