The New York Yankees have rocketed to the infamy of late, with 2023 being one heck of a season for them. As their injury-stained subpar stint came to a premature end, they looked back at what went wrong this year. Although they had an 82-win year, it presided on numerous missteps. Recounting these missteps, it is hard not to notice some trade-offs that stripped them of their glorious reputation. One such instance is with a former Yankees reliever.

This is not the first time that players who were let go by the mega-franchise have re-surged like never before after stripping off the Pinstripes. As they notice this more often, in an attempt to correct course, the Yankees have decided to reverse their decision. Does this mean that Brian Cashman is going to bring former players back?

Well, it looks like it. Jordan Montgomery, another former ace, has caught the eyes of the New York Yankees for a reunion. This 30-year-old would be up for grabs at the end of the season as a free agent. As the story goes, in 2022, the Yankees traded Montgomery to the St. Louis Cardinals to strengthen their postseason drive. It was not too late before the Pinstripes realized that it was one of their biggest indiscretions in the past five years. That said, Montgomery is not going to be an easy catch as the Yanks are not the only ones eying him.

Montgomery’s value has increased exponentially during his brief run with the Cardinals and the Texas Rangers, making him a highly sought-after free agent. Monty made a lasting impression in 2023 while pitching for the Cardinals and Rangers. In 188.2 innings, he recorded a record of 10-11 with a 3.20 ERA, 166 strikeouts, and 48 walks. According to USA Today Sports, the Cardinals have a firm grip on the left-hander additionally to the New York Yankees.

Brian Cashman and his team are resolute in their efforts to reacquire him during the 2024 free agency, when he is expected to demand an annual market value of $18.4 million. Having Jordan onboard could expand the Yankees’ financial capacity to approach other free agents, like Yoshinobu Yamamoto or Cody Bellinger. With that, Monty might be the Yanks’ propelling force. With that, one question remains. Will the Texas star join the Yanks to turn around their 2023 82-win season into a glorious 2024?

It is noteworthy that on Sunday’s night’s ALCS showdown, Montgomery created history by being the first pitcher to start multiple postseason games with no runs allowed in six or more innings. In the 2-0 win against the Houston Astros, Gumby threw 6 1/3 scoreless frames catapulting the team to a Game 1 win at Minute Maid Park.

With that, his value has increased dramatically during his rather brief stay with the Texas Rangers, making him a highly sought-after free agent. The Yankees’ chase to get him has instigated the fans.
