The Los Angeles Dodgers’ superstar Mookie Betts has spoken up. The man known for his otherworldly talent on the baseball diamond seems to be facing an issue. Apart from being usually dominant, this season, he’s facing a new challenge. This isn’t a usual one. It has the entire baseball world scratching their heads except Betts himself. He says, “I genuinely do not care”.

So what is it that is being so talked about? The question at hand is, ‘Is Betts transitioning from outfield to everyday shortstop?’ Well, the 31-year-old is a man with an MVP award and a resume overflowing with accolades. He is far from following the typical career trajectory. As someone who has six Gold Gloves in right field, returning to second base last year was a feather in his cap. But could shortstop be something he will consider

Let’s look at it this way. Shortstop is a position that he reported last played as an 18-year-old. In fact, even Betts’ manager, Dave Roberts, admits that the idea seems “preposterous.” But here’s the thing – Mookie Betts could not care less about this. His words were, “I genuinely do not care. I just want to win” as sweat dripped off his face. His sole focus? Winning.

The road to shortstop glory isn’t laden with sunshine and accolades. One can expect a lot of ground balls. Each day, irrespective of rain or shine, Betts is out there putting in the work. He takes grounder after grounder detailing his technique with coaches so he can be better than before. Not to mention his chasing perfection with an obsessive hunger almost. As infield coach Dino Ebel puts it, “He’s a beast. Obsessive about wanting to be the best.”

Nevertheless, transitions aren’t smooth. They come with hiccups. While there is a learning curve, unfamiliar angles on throws and screws on footwork need to be tightened. Betts is even aware of this considering his early-season error. After all, that’s a reminder that even the best need a moment to adjust themselves.

Where Does Betts Get His Drive To Win From?

Betts’ dedication to improvement is not a new path to venture into. Coaches recall his former off-seasons, when he had come prepared with drills and exercises. He intended to push his boundaries with trick shorts and unorthodox training techniques. Betts is someone who can do anything to gain that extra edge. First-base coach Clayton McCullough is a witness to this. His words were, “When he has a carrot in front of him or he has just competition, something to go compete… he does it to be excellent at it”.

There is no conclusion yet on whether Betts can excel at shortstop or not. But one thing’s for sure – he will be willing to take on any challenge for the team as and when required. Even though, “I think the whole world doubts it” Betts remains focused. It is his uncompromised desire to win that drives him no matter what position he is in.
