It has been a season of disappointments for the few MLB teams. It includes the top three highest spenders in the league, the New York Mets, the New York Yankees, and the San Diego Padres. All three teams are languishing last in their groups and fighting for survival with most odds against them. Because of it, frustration has got into the squads, which was visible in Manny Machado‘s reaction against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Given that Machado is the highest-paid athlete on the team, he wants to be the biggest contributor. But the season has not progressed similarly for the $350 million star. Because of this, he was not happy and showed it while kicking out the water cooler on his unsatisfactory dugout return. But it seems, even after it, Machado has not lost the hope of playoffs. While advocating for the fight to continue in his latest interview, he focused on his mistakes, which he will look to improve, going forward.

It has been an average season for the Padres third baseman. Machado is averaging 0.249 with 64 runs, and 25 home runs at an OPS of 0.772. It’s a significant dip from the past and syncs with the team’s performance too. The Padres are fourth in the NL West, 7.5 games behind the wild card spot.

Though the gap looks reachable, their current performances are not helping them up. They have lost four of their last five games and are struggling. But according to Machado, the fight must go on. According to the sandiegouniontribune.com. he is positive about their playoff chances. He said, “Maybe at a different time, at the end of the year, it might be a different conversation. But right now we’ve got a chance. And until we’re out, we’re gonna keep fighting.”

While accepting his mistakes, he added, “I’m gonna keep fighting. And I gotta play better baseball. Ultimately, we haven’t gotten to where we need to, and God’s honest truth, I haven’t played to my capabilities. I haven’t been good. So, I mean, a lot of it is probably my fault. But we’re gonna keep fighting no matter what.”

This was very positive from Machado, who has been termed ‘Cry Baby’ for his regular disagreements on the pitch. But how realistic his claim is? Let us analyze.

Can the Padres Cover the Deficit to Be in the Playoffs?

If they have to beat them in the race, the entire Padres unit has to come on a single page. But from the current looks, the team is away from it. They are inconstant in pitching, which has become their weakness. And with Yu Darvish injured, it has come under more pressure.

But even after it, they have all the pedigree to do the undoable. And if they are to make it to the playoffs, they have to start winning from the next game against the Cardinals. Will they be able to do it? Only time will tell.
