In comes, Jon Berti, who was acquired in a three-team trade with the Miami Marlins and the Tampa Bay Rays. Let’s just say that Berti isn’t just a typical injury fill-in. This “good for depth” guy, as Max Goodman put it, brings a whole lot more to the table than a mere replacement option.

DJ LeMahieu’s Replacement Comes With Quite a Resume
Berti has come off a career year with the Marlins, recording an impeccable .294/.344/.405 with a 103 wRC+. He’s known to be a contact hitter with a knack for the strike zone. So much so that his 6.8% walk rate sits in the 30th percentile. However, he is also capable of putting the bat on the ball consistently. Do note that his 18.2% strikeout rate appears in the 74th percentile. He has a keen eye for finding gaps too. But that’s not it for Berti.
Jon Berti is a solid pickup for the #Yankees, good for depth and a strong option to help at third base while DJ LeMahieu is out.
Berti plays multiple positions (3B, SS, 2B, LF), he's a speedster (led MLB in SB in '22 with 41) and he puts the ball in play (.294 BA in '23).

Beyond the offensive expertise, Berti is a harbinger of a defensive versatility that is going to be a massive asset for the Yanks. He can play five positions, namely, third base, shortstop, second base, and the outfield corners. He is however, likely to be seen in most action at third base initially.

But apart from just being able to play them all, note that he plays them well. Berti’s a great defender at both shortstop and third base as per both Outs Above Average (OAA) and Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). Oh, and did we mention he’s a burner on the basepaths? Let’s not forget that Berti led Major League Baseball with a whopping 41 in stolen bases in 2022!
