The New York Mets’ 2025 season ended much earlier than anyone expected. Despite boasting one of the highest payrolls in baseball, the team fell short of the postseason. That’s surely a major disappointment given the expectations back in spring. With such a significant investment, the front office is now under pressure to implement some substantial changes. Pitching and the bullpen, in particular, are expected to be top priorities after struggling in key moments throughout the year.

Moreover, the Mets’ big spending proved that money alone doesn’t guarantee wins, and even some players were left stunned by how things turned out. Well, the fallout has already started, and reportedly, several coaches have been let go. A few reports suggest that a few players could be next as the team looks to reset for 2026.

Kodai Senga and Jeff McNeil are two names that stick out as potential trade candidates for the Mets this offseason,” SleeperMets shared on X.

Well, McNeil, 33, is set to make $15.75 million in 2026. And he also has a club option for the same amount in 2027. However, since winning the NL batting title in 2022 and signing his extension, he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations. Over 122 games in 2025, McNeil hit .243 with a .335 OBP, a .411 slugging percentage, and a .746 OPS.

Meanwhile, Senga, 32, has $30 million left on his current contract over the next two years. But after struggling down the stretch and even being sent to the minors, his future in New York looks uncertain. In 22 starts last season, Senga posted a 7-6 record with a 3.02 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 109 SOs over 113.1 innings. Hence, a trade might make sense for both sides at this point.

Moreover, moving both McNeil and Senga could free up about $59.5 million that could go toward bringing in new talent and reshaping the roster.

The Mets might be fishing out a few big names

Well, in the coming offseason, the Mets would not be only about taking names off the clubhouse, but to adding a few more.

For instance, first baseman Pete Alonso has announced that he’ll be opting out of his deal with the Mets. As per rumors, he is now testing free agency again. Thus, setting up another offseason full of sweepstakes drama. If you remember, you know what happened last offseason when Alonso was in free agency. However, this time, the reports suggest the Mets are open to keeping Alonso, but only in a designated hitter role this time around.

On the other hand, there was plenty of talk last offseason that the Mets might let Alonso walk. They are possibly shifting Mark Vientos from third base to first. And opening up the hot corner for someone like Brett Baty, Ronny Mauricio, or Luisangel Acuna. Now that Alonso’s back on the open market, those conversations are sure to resurface.
