This is the curious case of Cody Bellinger. The 2019 NL MVP finds himself a bit of a strange off-season limbo. Most of the other top free agents have put pen to paper on lucrative deals, but Bellinger remains unsigned. Is the tug-of-war between his desire for a $200 million-plus, long-term contract and the lukewarm interest from teams worth it?

The ongoing reality is that neither the suitors nor ‘Belli’ wants to be flexible. So in that case, would Scott Boras accept a short-term deal as the only viable answer? As unexpected as it may seem, with the nearing Spring training there aren’t very many options. With that, one must unveil Bellinger’s tale of two halves.

MVP Pedigree Meets Market Uncertainty for Cody Bellinger

Ranging from his stellar rookie season to his MVP year, the 31-year-old was a force to be reckoned with. However, his career was met with a three-year slump. This cast a huge doubt on his consistency. But ‘Belli’ was strong enough to bounce back with the Chicago Cubs last year proving to the world that he still has it. Now he only wants his contract to reflect his true potential. Is it going to be a long-term deal? Or a short-term deal?

Though Bellinger’s request seems legit on his part, the market hasn’t been as receptive as he hoped. His request for a long-term commitment has inhibited teams from making a move owing to his past struggles. But one question lingers : Was the 2023 season a true resurgence or was it him just heavy lifting knowing his upcoming free agency?

Either way, this uncertainty opens the door for a short-term deal. Perhaps, instead of chasing a long-term deal right now, Bellinger could gamble on himself for a year or two. Delivering a strong performance would establish his value and would potentially be in the next free agency window. That said, let’s not forget that his next window would be brimming with star hitters like Juan Soto and Alex Bregman. Practically speaking, this solution might be ‘it’, but with this comes risks.

In the off chance he falters, his following contract could be significantly less-paying. Moreover, the 2024 free agency class is expected to be even more crowded, making it tougher to stand out. Which is why it’s important to weigh the pros and cons. Holding out for a long-term deal is a harbinger of its own set of challenges. As each day passes, the Spring Training nears and teams fill up gaps in their rosters.
