The New York Yankees created a stir late in March. Remember when they acquired right-handed pitcher JT Brubaker from the Pittsburgh Pirates? The deal, however, included an interesting add-on: a player to be named later (PTBNL). Now, this name has been unveiled.

Enter Keiner Delgado, a 20-year-old infielder with a promising future. He is now headed to the Steel City. Delgado’s arrival might not generate the same buzz as a major league star, but for the rebuilding Pirates, this acquisition might be the way to go. While Brubaker, Pittsburgh’s 2022 opening-day starter, continues to be sidelined recovering from Tommy John surgery, Delgado comes as an exciting package. He is a combination of offensive potential and defensive versatility. Isn’t that what the Pirates need right now?

How will Keiner Delgado help the Pittsburgh Pirates?

A switch-hitter who impressed in the Florida Complex League last season, Delgado recorded a solid .293 with eight home runs and a staggering 36 stolen bases. This combination of on-base skills and blazing speed on the basepaths is what infatuates teams when it comes to young prospects. But this $500,000 move does not specify Delagdo’s position on Pittsburgh’s roster yet.

On one hand, evaluations suggest he might eventually settle at second base. On the other hand, Delgado has experience playing shortstop and third base as well. Given his versatility, the Pirates have been blessed with valuable roster flexibility.

For Delgado, the trade presents a chance to develop within a system known for nurturing young talent. While the pressure of playing for the Yankees might have loomed large, Pittsburgh offers a more relaxed environment where he can refine his skills without the glaring spotlight of the Bronx.

How will this move affect the New York Yankees?

This trade also highlights the New York Yankees’ strategy of accumulating young talent. But the strategy behind this is to enable international signing bonus pool allotment. The additional $500,000 in bonus pool money allows them to pursue more international prospects in the upcoming signing period. This leeway is something the Yankees could use to their strength.

While the full impact of the Brubaker trade won’t be known for years, the arrival of Keiner Delgado in Pittsburgh adds a rather interesting piece to their team’s puzzle. His offensive prowess and versatility could blossom in the Steel City. With that, Pittsburgh might be off to a new revamp. With this 20-year-old on board, he could be a potential steal for the Pirates in this under-the-radar deal.
