The ongoing MLB offseason has gone similarly to what many expected it to be. The latest update that Shota Imanaga has signed for the Chicago Cubs only reiterates this idea. Notably, it has been an event to remember, even being in the run, due to surprises, historic deals, suspense, and questions it answered.

The off-season has been all about the Japanese players, especially the pitchers. The 30-year-old ace, Imanaga, was also on the list, with multiple teams on the chase. He, however, has given Chicago the nod ahead of Boston, marking the start of his MLB journey. What can be the reason behind this move?

With the transfer window near a close, fans were waiting to see what would be Shota Imanaga’s next move and what would it take to prolong his stay in the USA. There were increased chances of him returning to his home team, with no agreement with MLB teams in place. However, that did not turn out to be the case, after the World Baseball Classic champion’s agreement with the Chicago Cubs.

As reported first by MLB columnist Bob Nightengale, Imanaga will go for a medical before the Cubs officially announce him as their player. He shared, “Shota Imanaga is scheduled to undergo his physical on Wednesday in Chicago ahead of the Thursday deadline. The deal becomes official with the Chicago Cubs once he passes his physical with a press conference on Friday.”

This confirms that Imanaga would also be part of the National League, joining his national teammates Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Given that multiple teams were in line to sign him, what could be the reason behind his acceptance of the Chicago Cubs, overlooking the likes of the San Francisco Giants and Boston Red Sox?

Imanaga chooses the Cubs over other suitors

Although Shota Imanaga has yet to play in the big league, he has had a great last season in the NPB record. The 30-year-old recorded an ERA of 2.80 and claimed 174 hitters in 22 appearances for the Yokohama Bay Stars. Now, he would look to repeat the same in the MLB. But if he could have chosen any other team, then why the Cubs?

The answer is simple: his worth in the team. After signing Craig Counsell on the deal highest for the manager, the Cubs stayed silent in the market. This makes Shota Imanaga their first major signing. Given that they defeated others, the Japanese might have gotten a deal of his wish around $90 million, making him a central figure when the spring training starts.
