How did a meeting with Magic Johnson inspire Alex Rodriguez and his business ambitions?

In a recent episode of the Money Maze Podcast, A-Rod spoke about the importance of mentors and the role of Magic Johnson in his life. The slugger-turned-business mogul said, “I looked at as Role Models when I was playing because they were able to basically take a Hall of Fame Sports career and convert that into the Border Room to a Hall of Fame business career.”
He added, “Magic Johnson is an example about 25 years ago. [He] took me out in Rodeo Drive in LA and we went out to Nashville the steakhouse and we were supposed to meet for 30 minutes. And we met for about three hours. In that meeting, I took about seven pages of notes. And he basically shared his Playbook with me years before I was retired.”

In addition to that, A-Rod speaks about how the conversation with Johnson helped him wire his brain in a certain way, that “wired” his brain to think of life post-baseball. While talking about that, he said, “I started thinking about wiring my brain and thinking of the path that I wanted to take once I was done playing baseball. I was lucky because I was early in my playing days. And I started to think about life after baseball. And the things I have to do and the education I have to attain and collect before retirement.”

Today, six years since Alex Rodriguez left the ballpark for one last time, the former Yankees’ shortstop is chairman of A-Rod Corp, whose investments spread out to many investments. Most popularly, A-Rod is part owner of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and owner of the Waldorf Hotel in DC.
He’s also the chairman of Presidente Beer, amongst many other investments and controlling ownership roles.
